Under the guidance of the Director of Technology and Head Librarian, the Library Media Specialist helps manage a library resource program that supports the school’s curriculum by: supervising the library spaces; managing research materials and library resources in a variety of mediums and formats; developing engaging library programming; coordinating school textbook lists; and assisting students, faculty, and staff on a day to day basis with available resources and library spaces.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Monitor students in library spaces while creating a welcoming, and inclusive environment to promote the use of resources.
  • Assist the Director in curating library resources (print and electronic) to support the school curriculum and our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Actively seek out opportunities to provide student and faculty assistance with resources and tools, including drop-ins, study guides, and research visits
  • Develop and teach research methods, online behavior and digital literacy.
  • Coordinate community use of library space with Facilities and other departments.
  • Maintain the catalog database, electronic/physical subscriptions, and school library materials and resources.
  • Help to inventory, maintain, distribute, and securely store student technology resources (e.g. tablets, laptops).
  • Order, catalogue, and process books, ebooks, online databases, and other resources.
  • Oversee the online textbook store, maintain textbook list(s) and manage the library textbook reserve.
  • Help maintain the school archive.
  • Projects as required, and all other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology and Head Librarian.


Additional Information:

This position is part of the Library and Technology team, which includes the Director and one other Library Assistant, as well as technology team members. Sage Hill School has implemented and continues to follow health guidelines (including masks and social distancing) to maintain a clean and safe working environment.


Supervisory Duties: None

  • Demonstrates ability to work well with teenagers and manage them in a classroom (or similar) environment.
  • A broad, general education and 4-year degree (e.g. B.A. or B.S.) complete or in progress.
  • Communicate politely, firmly, and effectively in person, by phone and in writing.
  • Work in both noisy and quiet environments with equal aplomb.
  • Coordinate effectively with a team, in person and remotely (this team uses Slack, as well as email).
  • Proficiency with library/research databases and basic technology tools (tablets, laptops, printers, etc.)
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: educational programming, classroom teaching, academic technology, information literacy, library sciences, and/or academic or public library services.
  • Current participation preferred in a library studies program or pursuing an accredited MLIS degree or education degree.
