Description

The NLC Mutual Insurance Company provides reinsurance services to state municipal league-sponsored governmental risk pools.  Consistent with the mission, vision and values of NLC Mutual, direct the financial planning, controlling, accounting, tax, and reporting functions under the direction of our Chief Executive Officer and our Captive Managers.  Analyze the financial performance of the organization based on stated business objectives, established budgets, and financial targets. 

Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  1. Annual Budget Preparation
    • Lead the development and deployment of annual financial planning for NLC Mutual.  Recommend planning/forecasting methodologies, guidelines for allocations, budget constraints, and financial performance targets.
    • Manage the deployment and administration of the planning process.  Develop templates, policies, timelines, and other resources to support the effective administration of the budgeting process.
    • Prepare a summary of current period expenditures and provide to the CEO to assist in the development of annual budgets.
  2. Accounting / Controlling
    • Oversee the overall month-end closing process. 
    • Review financial statements including balance sheet, income statement, bank reconciliation, and revenue/expense accounts. Ensure account activity and reported results are reasonable and within expectations.
    • Review monthly and year-end cost allocations with NLC Office of Financial Management as necessary.
    • Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies as needed.
    • Prepare financial comparisons of actual results against budget and prior year.  Identify and explain variances in collaboration with the executive team.
    • Review quarterly and annual NAIC filings prepared by the Captive Manager.
    • Oversee the development of procedures, reports, and documentation for accounting functions. Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements that increase the overall efficiency of the Finance team.
    • Provides on-going review, analysis, and development of all banking, investment broker, and other financial service relationships.
  3. Reporting & Analysis
    • Learn and use current and established system platforms for claims management.
    • Develop and prepare standardized reports, dashboards, and financial metric scorecards.  Set up and maintain dashboard and reports in the accounting system.
    • Lead and manage Annual Report creation process.
    • Analyze key account trends and performance drivers.  Compile and present key results to the CEO and executive leadership to guide and inform effective decision-making.
    • Review monthly, quarterly, and annual summary reports of claims activity.  Use year end IBNR allocation provided by the actuary to adjust the Company’s carried reserves by policy year, by line of business, and by State. 
    • Prepare special analysis projects as requested to assist in the evaluation of proposed strategic initiatives and special projects. 
    • Communicate financial plans, forecasts, analysis results, reports, dashboards, and scorecards to the CEO and executive leadership.  Challenge the assumptions and conclusions in the financial reports, providing feedback and recommendations to management as appropriate.
    • Report out to Board of Directors and Board Committees as required including Board meeting material.  
    • Work with and advise on Capital Distributions to Members
  4. Tax & Compliance
    • Respond to information requests from the Captive Managers or Audit firm for financial information.
    • Maintain a sound working relationship with audit Partner.  This includes being aware of audit firm resources available that might be useful to the Company and/or its members.
    • Coordinate a request for proposal process to select the audit firm when requested by the audit committee. 
    • Prepare and file annual federal tax return consistent with previous reporting method.
    • Oversee compliance with State premium tax filings and other regulatory reporting related to State insurance departments.
    • Maintain a sound working relationship with the Captive Manager.  Provide regular communications with the Captive Manager regarding the status of open items and expedite the collection of materials when appropriate.
    • Recommend, implement, and maintain effective business controls in collaboration with the CEO.
    • Establish and maintain a record retention policy based on oversight requirements and applicable regulations.  Educate the Finance team on controls and ensure financial materials are retained according to policy.
    • Maintain the confidentiality of financial records.  Ensure all materials are properly secured according to department procedures.
    • Evaluation and oversight for the risk associated with company property and liability exposure.  Assess insurance requirements and collaborate with firms to establish coverage plans and contracts to provide proper protection for the organization.
  5. Leadership
    • Guide and direct the efforts of assigned staff members to complete work assignments.  Define individual work goals, expectations, priorities, and measures for success.
    • Serve as a mentor and coach for staff in their assigned areas of expertise.  Review financial reports and entries for errors to ensure data accuracy and quality.
    • Perform functions typically associated with managing and leading others, including performance management, recruitment and selection, and compensation and policy administration.
  6. Perform other duties and complete special projects as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 2 years of controller experience or 5 years of experience working as a staff accountant and/or financial analyst, preferably with GAAP and Statutory insurance accounting experience
  • Demonstrated experience with automated accounting systems
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with the ability to create and use complex formulas and pivot tables in Excel
