Position Summary:

The Software Developer - JavaScript will spend most of their time working on Caris’ Electronic Medical Record (EMR) SMART app integrations and other future SAAS style web projects – both frontend (~60%) and backend (~40%).  This role will be working with a broader team that is focused on partnerships and clinical staff experience within the broader Caris Life Sciences Software Portfolio.

Caris Life Sciences is a precision medicine lab company. In a nutshell, we conduct in-house lab testing on tissue samples, primarily cancer biopsies, to provide Oncologists better intel on how to improve their patient’s outcomes. The Caris EMR SMART apps will be our embedded presence in patient medical records for the ordering of and subsequent results of our suite of DNA sequencing tests.

The majority of the Strategic Ops team is based out of our Headquarters in Irving, Texas, but you will be interacting with other team members in Eastern and Mountain time zones. Caris has a large presence in Phoenix, Arizona.


Project Examples:

  • SSO / Open ID Connect Integration
  • Collaborating with backend developers in other parts of the org to design and build out API integrations with their systems.
  • Front end JavaScript work

Software Developer - JavaScript will be working alongside web developers consuming similar API’s as they integrate with electronic medical record systems. You will report to the VP of Strategic Ops – Software.

We understand most web developers do not have a deep background in biology. If you have a biology or healthcare background, that’s great. The most important thing is that you have an eagerness to learn and collaborate.  We have a seasoned staff of healthcare experts including PHD’s as well as customers that are eager to teach & give feedback where there might be gaps in your understanding.  

Job Responsibilities:

  • Integration of user-facing elements developed by front-end developers with server-side logic
  • Creation of server-side logic
  • Writing reusable, testable, and efficient code
  • Help maintain code quality, organization, automatization & documentation
  • Design and implementation of low-latency, high-availability, and performant applications
  • Implementation of security and data protection
  • Integration of data storage solutions such as relational databases & other API’s.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure and data teams in other parts of the organization to securely access and expose data via API’s for consumption by our UI offerings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of Node.js and frameworks available for it particularly express.js
  • Understanding the nature of asynchronous programming and its quirks and workarounds
  • Good understanding of server-side templating languages (Pug, EJS, etc).
  • Good understanding of server-side CSS preprocessors (SASS, PostCSS, etc)
  • User authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments
  • Integration of multiple data sources and databases into one system
  • Understanding fundamental design principles behind a scalable application
  • Understanding differences between multiple delivery platforms, such as mobile vs. desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform
  • Creating database schemas that represent and support business processes
  • Implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, particularly Git & collaborative code review practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Distributed collaboration with team members – We primarily reside in Eastern, Central & Mountain time zones
  • Familiarity with continuous integration & deployment tooling
  • Accessibility and security compliance 
  • Our projects leverages SSO via Open ID Connect, Express and containerization where appropriate.
  • Experience in these tangential technologies are a bonus.
