The Opportunity.

The Steward works in concert with the Stewardship Manager to deliver excellent standards in maintenance of the Long Hill Portfolio properties, including enhancing the visitor experience. The Steward also supports stewardship projects, programming, and events as needed.  The successful candidate will be based at Long Hill but will also support stewardship work across the portfolio which includes Coolidge Reservation, Ravenswood Park, Old Town Hill, Misery Islands and more.


In This Role You Will:

  • Work in concert with and under the direction of the Property Director and Stewardship Manager to plan and perform the day-to-day maintenance, stewardship and conservation of properties.

  • Implement seasonal maintenance programs for grounds keeping and landscaping or as directed.

  • Assist specialist teams (trails, buildings & structures, ecology, horticulture, collections) as needed in stewardship conservation projects.

  • Assist Stewardship Manager with general supervision of part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers.

  • Support visitor experience, safety, and services through safety patrols, monitoring, and ensuring proper wayfinding, clean and functioning facilities.   

  • Work under the direction of the Stewardship Manager to develop work plans, identify special projects and volunteer opportunities.

  • Support special events and other significant programs that expand the visibility of the properties and The Trustees.

  • Represent The Trustees in a variety of forums.

  • May be required to work on weekends and/or evenings to attend meetings, participate in or lead programs, workshops and/or tours or to ensure the protection of the property and/or the safety of the visiting public.

  • Participation in activities at other Trustees properties may occasionally be required.

  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Other Information


  • Associate Degree in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Natural Resources, or other related field.

  • A minimum of three years professional experience associated with the responsibilities of the position.

  • Excellent “people skills” to lead, inspire, motivate and work cooperatively and harmoniously with fellow employees, volunteers, committees, members and the public.

  • Must have horticulture, turf management, formal landscape management, trails maintenance, and/or field management experience.

  • Experience managing cultural/historic landscapes and/or maintaining structures and building systems a plus. 

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.

  • Proven ability to complete assigned tasks and projects, meet deadlines and manage     multiple tasks.

  • The ability to operate motor vehicles, tractor/backhoe, and turf equipment.

  • Experience using a chainsaw, string trimmer, blower and other small power tools.

  • Basic computer skills

Currently the Long Hill Portfolio consists of 11 properties, comprising a public garden and historic home, recreational trails, open fields, wetlands, islands, and forest. The properties in full are: Long Hill, Coolidge Point, Misery Islands, Ravenswood, Old Town Hill, Gerry Island, Crowninshield Island, Stavros, Halibut Point, Mt Anne and Agassiz Rock.
