The Studio

Unexpected Games (UXG) Games was founded in 2019 by veteran board game designer Corey Konieczka. We publish innovative board games such as The Initiative, Voices in My Head, and 3000 Scoundrels. Our goal is inspire in the hobby games industry by creating games that are novel, fun, thematic, and accessible.

We are a small studio that strives to be a positive force in the hobby games community. Unexpected Games is a subsidiary of Paris-based Asmodee Group, a leading global publisher of tabletop games.


Summary of Position

The communications and operations manager will support our small catalogue of games by splitting their time across two areas of responsibility:

  1. On the Communications side, they will oversee and contribute to the overall marketing plans for Unexpected Games. They are responsible for planning and developing fun, engaging, and effective marketing content to drive interest in the Studios games, events, and promotions.

  1. On the Operations side, they will help us create high quality products. They will help the Head of Studio manage freelancers, assist game development, and help our products hit deadlines within budget.


Essential Functions

  • Plans, develops, and writes engaging content for the web, social media, advertising, and other marketing channels.

  • Updates Unexpected Games website with news articles, image content, product information, links, and other relevant consumer information.

  • Oversees and manages the complete editorial calendar for website and social media content.

  • Creates plans to grow our social media presence. Runs our social media channels in a personal way that builds a positive community.

  • Develops and oversees, in collaboration with Head of Studio, execution of marketing plans for all products, spanning multiple channels, including website, video, print ads, social media, digital advertising, and more. Work directly with key stakeholders, including Studio leadership and Asmodee marketing leads.

  • Maintains a collaborative working relationship with Head of Studio, including regular meetings and communication, sharing plans, asset gathering, and other activities.

  • Collaborates with industry influencers regarding prerelease spoilers, previews, unboxing and other tactics to showcase UXGs products.

  • Collects analytics from across all digital platforms including Google Analytics and synthesizes into a future-looking strategy and in-the-moment adjustments to tactics.

  • Responsible for timely delivery of content per the schedule, including approvals from licensors and internal stakeholders. Ensures all content is on strategy, on schedule, and up to a high-quality bar.

  • Coordinates globally with marketing and translation teams from other branches of Asmodee, enabling all marketing assets and products to be localized and released simultaneously by all sister branches.

  • Crafts, directs, and produces UXGs marketing presentations, including consumer-facing as well as internal-only presentations.

  • Provides guidance and strategic vision to Marketing Graphic Designers in the creation of all visual assets, including advertisements, website graphics, event banners, and more.

  • Travels to multiple shows per year, assisting with the successful production of the event, fan engagement, and serving as an ambassador for the UXG brand.

  • Helps manage external freelancers (such as playtesters, editors, and artists) by sending them contracts and invoices through our automated system.

  • Participates in regular online playtest sessions with Head of Studio, and provides feedback to help improve the games in development.

  • Works closely with the Head of Studio, production team, and global supply chain team to create product budgets and schedules. Communicates these schedules with external partners.

  • All other tasks as directed by management.



  • Bachelors degree in Marketing, Creative Writing, or related field.

  • At least five (5) years of professional marketing experience.

  • At least one (1) year of project management experience preferred.

  • Experience with Photoshop or similar software.

  • Experience in the hobby game market preferred; not required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Passionate about boardgames.

  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Exceptional skills planning, developing, and executing marketing materials with emphasis on creative website and social media writing.

  • Some knowledge of backend website navigation.

  • Some visual layout skills, with the ability to create visually appealing content.

  • Intimate knowledge of organic content posting and advertising on social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

  • Knowledge of Google advertising and analytics.

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must enjoy a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and occasional high-peak times.

  • Strategic thinker who can see the big picture.

  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be trustworthy with highly confidential materials.

  • Must be detail oriented and extremely well organized.

  • Some international travel may be required.

  • This is a remote position for any resident in the United States.
