Lab Technician (Phlebotomist)

The lab technician is responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing and provides data for use in diagnosis and treatment.

  • Executes the start-up and shut-down of laboratory equipment
  • Runs controls and ensures maintenance and corrects operation of machines
  • Performs the loading and unloading of lab specimens from automated and non-automated instrumentation
  • Performs various waived testing ordered by provider and assists in problem requisitions
  • Performs phlebotomy
  • Informs provider of abnormal lab results immediately
  • Ensures specimens being sent out are completed accurately
  • Uses universal precautions at all times in lab
  • Trains new hires and conducts lab competencies
  • Assists patients including answering phones and responding to inquiries
  • Collects, labels, processes and preserves blood, urine and other specimens according to established laboratory procedures
  • Enters, accesses and executes lab orders in the appropriate laboratory and electronic medical record system
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory inventory and work area
  • Updates and maintains laboratory logs and records
  • Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties including insurance verification and order entry processing
  • Adheres to OSHA and HIPAA requirements
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner
  • May cross train with Medical Assistant job duties (see Medical Assistant Job Description)
  • Must adhere to FHLC policies and procedures.
  • Regular and Reliable Attendance.

This position requires an individual, who has the ability to work independently, is able to work under pressure, is analytical and has excellent problem-solving skills. The ability to respect the confidentiality of patient information while performing job duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and public.

High school education, typing and computer skills required. CPR required. Knowledge of computer systems, medical terminology, and lab processes required. At least 1 year experience in an outpatient medical practice setting required.
