Harris County ESD#13 - Cypress, TX

Position: Firefighter, open positions to be filled immediately, and future hiring list for 2 years.

Status: Hourly, non-exempt

Salary: (FLSA overtime for all hours worked over 106 hours in a 14-day work/pay cycle)

  • Starting base is $19.25 per hour
  • Ride-up pay:
    • Engineer Operators $2.75 per hour extra
    • Officer in Charge $5.50 per hour extra

Shift: 12-hour increments of pre-scheduled shifts, including nights and weekends.

  • TCDRS Retirement, 7% employee contributions, 2:1 employer match, 5-year vesting.
  • Health Insurance: Must work an average of 30 hours per week based on a 6-month lookback to be eligible. 60% employee coverage, 0% dependent coverage.

Work Location & Conditions:

Adverse or potentially hazardous environments will be routinely present during training exercises and/or emergency response operations. With protective clothing and SCBA, moderate to heavy lifting will be required.

Requirements or Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • TCFP Basic Structural Firefighter Certification
  • TDSHS Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) Certification
  • Courage to be Safe Certificate
  • Traffic Incident Management Certificate
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 Certificates
  • Valid Texas Drivers' License Class B (Firefighter Exempt)
  • Driving record that currently meets Departments Operations of Emergency Apparatus Vehicles Guideline
  • Pass department physical, drug test, physical ability test, and background check

Preferred or Desired Qualifications:

  • TCFP Intermediate, Advanced, Master Structural Firefighter Certification
  • TCFP Driver Operator Aerial Certification
  • TCFP Instructor I-III Certification
  • TCFP Fire Officer I-IV Certification
  • TCFP Fire Investigator Certification
  • TCFP Fire Inspector Certification
  • TDSHS EMT-I, or EMT-P Certification by the Texas Department of Health
  • Blue Card Incident Command Certification
  • Current status as engineer operator or officer with a career department
  • Hazardous materials, rescue, or other special operations training and or certifications
  • College Education-AS or BS degree in Fire Science or related field
  • One year of service as a firefighter with a 911 Service Provider (Fire Department)

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of current certification requirements for firefighter personnel
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, in English
  • Thorough knowledge and proficiency in computers, MS Office, automated fire reports software, and the ability to communicate effectively using the same
  • Strong team building, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work well without supervision
  • Able to handle sudden changing work conditions and assignments
  • Working knowledge of emergency operations management and emergency tactics
