Description

Position Summary

The Creative Communications Intern will work closely with the Design Team within the Marketing & Communications department at United Way of Greater Atlanta. The intern will be able to develop their creative portfolio, hone their problem-solving skills, work within established branding guidelines, and learn the inner-workings of a corporate communications department. The intern will assist designers with related tasks such as cropping, resizing, and gathering photos using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Canva; sorting event and meeting materials; and updating templated files using MS PowerPoint and Google Slides. The ideal intern will be flexible, adaptable, and be able to learn and respond quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Helping with graphic design-related tasks including, but not limited to: using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Canva to crop/ resize photos; helping to sort print materials for events; assist with gathering photos; and updating presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides
  • Assist with digital asset organization (Images/ stock photo library)
  • Assist with taking photos at organization events as neede
  • Participate in brainstorming/idea generating sessions
  • Intern will have the opportunity to interact with and shadow marketing & communications professionals on staff based on their area of interest and availability; attend industry-related tours (print shops, events, etc.), and be able to attend/assist with the set-up of Toastmasters United meetings to develop their communication and presentation skills
  • At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will leave with a designed portfolio piece based
    on their experience that they will present to the intern manager and team.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in graphic design or communications-related program of study
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite, MS PowerPoint, MS Office
  • Online portfolio and/or samples of creative work
  • Comfortable collaborating as well as working independently
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of current social media applications (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Photography, Motion Graphics and/or Videography experience is a plus
  • Studio art (any medium) experience is a plus

Expectations

A successful intern will:

  • Report to internship site at agreed-upon dates/times
  • Be a strong communicator with problem solving skills
  • Be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced office setting
Eligibility

The United Way of Greater Atlanta (UWGA) internship program is a one semester, paid program designed to give college students an opportunity to complement their formal education with career-related experience.

United Way of Greater Atlanta supports internship programs that provide growth and learning opportunities to students pursuing their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

To qualify as a student intern, students must meet one of the four following enrollment criteria:

  • The student is currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by the school, organization, or institution.
    • The student must provide proof of enrollment upon hire.
    • Proof of continued enrollment must be provided each semester during the regular school year.
  • The student has been accepted into an educational institution which meets the above requirement, when between institutions (e.g., from high school to college).
