Summary and Essential Job Functions

The Technical Specialist of Molecular Diagnostics is responsible for the Westwood laboratory operation including laboratory testing, personnel management, and material management. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Perform daily assigned tasks within designated specialty area.
  2. Provide day to day oversight, training and supervision of designated specialty area.
  3. Monitor test analyses to ensure acceptable levels of performance are maintained by all staff.  Also responsible for reviewing and maintaining quality control within designed specialty area
  4. Assist Department Supervisor and other Technical Specialists as needed.
  5. Submit reviewed test results for Laboratory leadership verification as required by departmental policies and procedures.
  6. Assist department leadership with annually evaluating and documenting performance of all testing personnel.
  7. Participate in monthly staff meetings and provide summary reports of departmental activities.
  8. Work with Laboratory leadership to ensure that the specific specialty department successfully meets qualifications for CLIA, CAP, FDA and ASHI inspections.
  9. Perform orientation and training for testing personnel as necessary.
  10. Perform audits and departmental self-assessments.
  11. Perform inventory management to ensure adequate supplies are available.
  12. Evaluate and document quality control of new lots/shipments prior to usage.
  13. Ensure maintenance is completed daily/weekly/monthly as needed.
  14. Provide customer service for clients as necessary to meet client needs and maintain high levels of service, in the absence of the Department Supervisor.
  15. Perform and oversee proficiency testing for all surveys and ensure the results are entered in a timely manner.
  16. Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  17. Perform and/or document test performance specifications, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity.
  18. Evaluate and implement new means of improving workflow.
  19. Serve as a member of the administrative on-call team (AOC).
    1. Maintain on-call responsibilities as necessary to ensure coverage of the call schedule.
    2. Maintain current knowledge of IDD, HLA typing, flow cytometry, antibody screening, and ABO to provide   appropriate feedback as AOC.
    3. Participate in the weekly AOC huddle for case reviews and discussion of opportunities for improvement.

 

HLA AND MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS

 

  1. Oversee molecular typing and chimerism testing workflow.
  2. Ensure DSA/MFI reports are available to the requesting centers in a timely manner.
Qualifications and Behavioral Competencies

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

  1. Undergraduate degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, chemical, physical or biological science or related field required. 
  2. For all hires after 2020, obtain a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) ABHI certification within 2 years of eligibility.
  3. Minimum of three years HLA, flow cytometry, infectious disease and/or molecular diagnostics experience.
  4. Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and participate in 24-hour HLA call.  Required to work for extended periods of time with few breaks.
  5. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy.  Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. 
  6. Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; good problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
  7. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
  8. Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and lab equipment.
  9. Ability to speak and communicate clearly in order to accurately convey information in person or by phone.
  10. OSHA Category I – Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties.  Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
  11. Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
