Job Summary:

The United Way of Southwestern PA is looking for a talented, dedicated and resilient Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator supports the Director of Volunteer Engagement and the Manager of Volunteer Engagement with the execution of all volunteer related events, including corporate volunteer events, Affinity group projects, United Way-led events and large-scale public projects. This individual will contribute toward all of United Ways volunteer and engagement work, which mobilizes thousands of volunteers, hundreds of Pittsburgh's top companies, and dozens of leading human services agencies in support of United Ways overall strategic objectives.


Essential Functions:

  • Organize, manage and execute all logistical aspects for volunteer events related to:
    • Corporate events throughout Allegheny and Butler Counties
    • Affinity and Leadership Groups, including Next Gen, Women's Leadership Council and Tocqueville Society
    • Public projects
    • Other special projects as assigned
  • Develop and implement engagement opportunities for United Way stakeholders, including donors, committee members and members of the public
  • Track data for all volunteer events, including projects held by all United Way stakeholders, and maintain integrity of data at all times
  • Ensure all volunteers have completed waiver and photo release forms prior to each event and ensure accurate filing of all completed waivers on United Way server
  • Coordinate pick up, storage and distribution of any collection drives items
  • Oversee organization of storage room
  • Initiate and maintain positive relationships with non-profit organizations to help develop and evaluate volunteer projects


Core Competencies and Skills:

  • Experience with and knowledge of the principles and best practices of volunteer management including volunteer recruiting, screening, development, supervision, relations, recognition and retention
  • Ability to articulate mission of United Way in front of varying sized audiences
  • Effective project management skills, attention to detail and ability to drive projects toward successful completion
  • An understanding of various stakeholders needs and the ability to motivate and inspire excellence among the volunteers and supervisors
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and volunteers and to function well within a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, both orally and through written materials; demonstrate active listening skills when working with others
  • Ability to develop workable action plans to achieve objectives
  • Ability to provide general management and oversight for all volunteer events while seeking out opportunities to improve quality and productivity
  • Ability to make timely and decisive decisions with a sense of urgency
  • Experience working in a non-profit agency, preferably one providing services, and experience supporting volunteers
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and database management
  • Display an exemplary degree of customer service




Other Job Requirements:

  • Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighting up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequently bends, kneels and crouches
  • Must have access to and have a current license to drive a vehicle as needed
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to attend meetings, trainings, and other functions during evenings and weekends
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to fulfill department goals
  • High level of enthusiasm, initiative, motivation and self-direction

Education: Bachelors degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience required

Experience: One to two years of experience in volunteer management, event coordination or related field
