Description

The Potomac School art department is seeking candidates for an anticipated art teacher vacancy for the 2025-2026 school year. This is a full-time position reporting to the assigned division head and is responsible for teaching four classes of art, as well as advising a group of students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate artistic ability and personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, by understanding the knowledge base and developmental characteristics of 7-12th graders.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials in a manner that inspires independent learning and facilitates active improvisation using various teaching methods.
  • Instruct students in studio methods and with a variety of materials.
  • Teach visual art curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, inform parents of progress.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records; manage classroom and discipline procedures to ensure an environment conducive to learning; meet with parents to discuss student progress and concerns.
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops.
  • Work in an organized, collaborative, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
  • Advise a small group of Intermediate School students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in art and design or a related field with a minimum of two years’ experience teaching.
  • Ability to communicate, motivate and understand students, attending to their educational and emotional needs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement.
  • Ability to teach visual art in grades 7-12.
  • Strong direct personal experience in studio arts.
  • Experience teaching in a range of studio art media and methods with an emphasis on drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture.
  • Skilled in effective communication.
