Position Summary:

The Supervisor is responsible for managing, overseeing and ensuring the smooth running of the department and its staff. The Supervisor is also responsible for establishing, standardizing, and implementing departmental procedures. In addition, the Supervisor must collaborate with pathologists and other departments to make improvements to operations and ensure efficient workflow. It is crucial that the Supervisor is knowledgeable about HIPAA, CAP and CLIA regulations, practices and enforces all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) procedures as this position is responsible for controlling staff exposure to a number of environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc.

Essential Duties:


  1. Oversees daily operations at all assigned sites & departments
  2. Manages all aspects of staffing, including but not limited to scheduling, budgeting and performance reviews
  3. Maintains and/ensures employees' productivity and work quality
  4. Oversees assistant supervisors and leads, as appropriate
  5. Mentors, trains and coaches staff including assistant supervisors and leads
  6. Designs and implements department specific training programs and process improvement projects
  7. Ensures new processes are implemented effectively
  8. Conducts periodic departmental CAP and/or DOH evaluations to maintain regulatory requirements
  9. Troubleshoots and works to resolve any issues that arise within and between departments
  10. Frequently and effectively communicate with department staff, pathologists and company management team regarding issues which affect overall operations
  11. Provides back up assistance to the department
  12. Other duties as assigned


  1. Technical experience in Cytology, Grossing or Histology required
  2. ASCP or equivalent qualification preferred in Cytology, Grossing or Histology
  3. 5+ years of technical laboratory experience, preferably in a moderate to high volume laboratory
  4. 2+ years of leadership experience
