Position Summary:

The Safety Officer is responsible for creating a culture of safety to reduce safety related incidents. This position works directly with the laboratories and serves as an expert regarding chemical hygiene, environmental management and general safety to ensure best practices and compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations. This position requires the individual to work both independently and as a member of committees which facilitate ongoing quality within the company. The Safety Officer must adhere to strict HIPAA standards as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace.  

Essential Duties:

  1. Conducts weekly & monthly and annual safety inspections for main lab, ensures that site labs are being conducted on a regular basis
  2. Audits site for safety compliance
  3. Collaborates with vendor to manage hazardous waste, including invoicing of waste manifests
  4. Oversees exposure monitoring for all hazardous chemicals
  5. Conducts job hazard analyses
  6. Conducts Safety orientation
  7. Develops, implements, and maintains safety policies
  8. Conducts Root Cause Analysis and safety investigations
  9. Collaborates with Human Resources on processing L&I claims
  10. Leads the Safety Committee and Emergency Response Team
  11. Administers the respirator program
  12. Oversees and develops accident prevention program
  13. Acts as a resource/internal expert for supervisors in developing training modules and competency assessments
  14. Oversees the respirator program, including training staff to fit test and perform fit testing
  15. Other duties as assigned

  1. Minimum of high school diploma required
  2. AS/BS degree in a science field preferred
  3. Experience or training in conducting investigations required
  4. 1+ years of safety experience in a medical setting preferred
  5. 3-4 years  of safety experience in a laboratory, histology, pathology, preferred
  6. Experience working with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory preferred
  7. Valid drivers license and ability to travel to sites as needed
