Summary of Position 

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations is a member of a highly skilled and productive team of fundraising professionals working together to improve the lives of homeless children and their families. This role is responsible for developing and implementing strategy for the achievement of Horizons for Homeless Children’s (Horizons) corporate and foundation fundraising goals, as well as for the continued growth and effective management of Horizons’ corporate partnerships and foundation relationships.  

The person in this role must be articulate and passionate about the issue of homeless children and represent the urgency of the issue when communicating with prospective funders.  They will be assertive and creative in forging relationships with new corporations and foundations.  They will effectively leverage every opportunity to network and present Horizons’ mission and programs wherever partnerships and long-term relationships are possible.  

 

Responsibilities 

Strategy 

  • Work closely with the Chief Development, Marketing, and Volunteer Engagement Officer (CDMVO) and Development senior staff to develop and implement overall development relations strategy. 

  • Develop and implement strategy to gain new corporate and foundation partners, while maintaining and growing existing partnerships. 

Grant Stewardship 

  • Develop and implement work plans to implement strategy and achieve Horizons’ foundation and corporate fundraising goals, including but not limited to:  

  • Identify, cultivate and steward new and existing corporate and foundation donors, 

  • Identify and prioritize activities to engage corporate and foundation donors and prospects, 

  • Research, identify and pursue well-aligned grant opportunities, 

  • Develop detailed annual projections for corporate and foundation revenue, 

  • Manage reports and related correspondence for corporate and foundation donors and prospects, 

  • Deliver compelling presentations to corporate staff, 

  • Cultivate corporate “champions” to spread the word, foster support for Horizons, 

  • Work with Board members to foster relationships with new companies, including meetings with potential funders, 

  • Work with staff and donors in developing and implementing effective in-kind giving strategies, 

  • Work with corporations to develop and implement partnership opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, corporate drives and fundraising activities, and volunteer activities. 

  • Coordinate and track all corporate volunteer activities, including working closely with both program and corporate staff to plan, schedule, and implement all activities. 

  • Prepare reports for presentation to the Board of Directors. 

  • Supervise Assistant Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations in the implementation of operating plans and strategies. 

Internal Collaboration 

  • Maintain current knowledge of key trends and issues affecting Horizons’ corporate and foundation fundraising success. 

  • Collaborate with Marketing staff on the development of corporate-specific materials and communications, including corporate involvement for the “Corporate Corner” of the e-newsletter, the Annual Report, the website, and social media. 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with program staff to understand and articulate program needs and activities in grant proposals and reports to funders. 

Qualifications 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing or relevant field, Master’s degree preferred 

  • At least five years of successful grant writing experience and work with corporations and foundations. 

  • Proven track record of successfully raising major grant dollars ($25k+- $100k+)   

  • Energetic, positive candidate who is adept at networking and building relationships. 

  • Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Strong research and planning skills 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Knowledge of state and national foundation/corporate communities 

  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge database a plus 

  • Supervisory skills with a strengths-based and mutual respect approach and ability to manage workloads, providing appropriate support, and addressing professional development needs.
