About us

Horizons for Homeless Children (Horizons) is a local non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of young homeless children in Massachusetts and helping their families succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services. What you’ll do

As our Human Resource Manager, you’ll support staff through HR systems and processes with compassion, consistency, and creativity to provide responsive and values-aligned HR services. You'll be responsible for the daily administration of employee relations, HRIS/employee systems, engagement, training and development, performance management, and leadership coaching. Your ability to communicate with our bilingual staff in English and Spanish will be an essential part of your success. You’ll be directly supported by the Human Resources Director alongside your colleague, Senior Recruiter, and direct report, Benefits Administrator.

 

Where and when you’ll work

This is a 40-hour, full time position that’s exempt from overtime. You can expect to work a hybrid schedule Monday through Friday with at least 3 days on site and 2 days working from home during regular business hours, as your biggest client group are essential staff who work predominantly on-site. There will be occasional evening or weekend events with advanced planning and notice. Our beautiful new [in 2021] space is located:  Edgerley Family Horizons Center at 1785 Columbus Ave, Roxbury, MA.

 

More details about your responsibilities

  • Establish strategic partnerships and support teams through employee relations concerns, performance management initiatives and change management, administering policies, and recommending effective, scalable solutions for addressing workplace issues.
  • Provide leadership coaching at all levels on employee relations techniques, corrective action, documentation, and performance management best practices to support successful self-managed leadership practices.
  • With an eye for people data and metrics, you’ll track trends and share insights to improve the employee experience, creating materials for the leadership team and collaborating with the HR team on continuous, data-driven improvements.
  • Drive employee engagement, promoting and supporting Horizons’ employee programs and initiatives, including professional development funds, recognition and milestone awards, employee resource groups, events, All Staff trainings, stay/exit interviews, etc. 
  • Cultivate and promote a healthy organizational culture both internally and externally, in alignment with the values and mission of Horizons for Homeless Children, championing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through everything you do.
  • Manage employee life cycle changes and processes in HRIS and practices, including payroll changes, employee files, and offboarding, and providing back-up support to Benefits Administrator when out.
  • Conduct investigations as needed, provide accurate and timely responses to concerns and determine expedient solutions to ensure fairness and legal compliance.
  • Coordinate issues relative to compliance, employment law; stay current on HR regulations and notices ensuring compliance across the workplace, including COVID-19 health and safety regulations while the need persists.

Starting salary range, compensation, and benefits

$57,500 – $63,000 is the starting salary range for our Manager level roles with a 4% premium uplift for Bilingual English/Spanish. Your starting salary will fall within that range depending on your competencies, experience, and skillset.

Your total compensation package includes the following benefits:

  • Health coverage options designed to be as comprehensive and affordable for you as possible, with Horizons covering between 70-75% of premiums (a value that ranges from an additional $8,000 – 20,000 per year based on your enrollment choices).
  • While you have a choice between an HMO and PPO plan for medical coverage, most employees pay $76 for individual, $147 for 2-person, or $288 for family coverage per bi weekly paycheck and never pay more than $300 for individual or $600 for 2-person/family toward deductibles.
  • Paid leave coverage is offered through Massachusetts’ Paid Family and Medical Leave. Horizons covers both medical and family contributions at 60% (100% for employees who earn less than $50,000 annually) with up to 26 weeks of paid leave available based on eligibility and approval.
    • Horizons’ additionally offers 1 week for paid parental leave for welcoming a child into your family through birth, foster, or adoption, that often covers the waiting period for PFML to begin.

What you’ll bring

Education & experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in Human Resources, 3+ in Employee Relations
  • Experience administering HR systems required, Paycom or complex, customizable system preferred
  • Proven track record to assess situations and create innovative, people-centered solutions
  • Experience supporting diverse employee populations, particularly multilingual groups
  • Experience delivering and/or facilitating effective and engaging employee trainings and employee relations solutions

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred to be able to communicate complex HR-related concepts into easy to understand information in employee’s native or primary learning language

  • Supervisory skills with a strengths-based and mutual respect approach and ability to manage workloads, providing appropriate support, and addressing professional development needs.
  • Able to communicate complicated concepts and processes in simple language that non-HR folks can understand
  • Ability to partner with HR and managers to effectively manage all types of employee relations cases
  • Excellent coaching, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills, including communication, collaboration, case handling, and project management
  • Experience with a variety of issues such as harassment, discrimination, workplace violence, ethical issues, etc.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Motivated self-starter who is comfortable working as part of team and independently
  • Previous experience working in nonprofit or education (with teachers) environments is preferred
  • HR certification (PHR or SHRM-CP) a plus
