*You must live in the Metro Detroit area! There will be occasional in-person events that you are required to attend!*

Overview: 

The Volunteer Programs Coordinator assists with the management of the MHS volunteer program to include recruiting, screening, interviewing, orienting, training and responding to volunteer issues and concerns. This coordinator position will also oversee all aspects of special event volunteer support, including training and onsite direction.  This position requires a flexible schedule and local travel; the coordinator will be required to attend evening and weekend events, with mileage pay according to MHS policy.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit compassion for all animals entrusted to the Michigan Humane Society.
  • Recruit volunteers, with focus on areas of need at any given time. Attend events, connect with the community, and drive recruitment to achieve departmental goals.
  • Point of contact for all MHS volunteers, provide initial orientation and guidance to volunteers joining our team throughout onboarding process.
  • Work closely with department and facility managers/supervisors to ensure appropriate volunteer staffing, training and communications.
  • Coordinate with staff members the need to recruit, schedule and confirm volunteers for special events and programs. 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers at special events. 
  • Answer phones, emails and questions from current and potential volunteers; process new volunteer applications online; send information to potential volunteers.
  • Reply to inquiries from volunteers and members of the public.
  • Provide onsite volunteer training and assistance to MHS locations, on anas needed basis.
  • Screen court-ordered community service volunteer applications; explain the program to these prospective volunteers.
  • Coordinate and setup school service project volunteer schedules.
  • Help plan and execute the volunteer recognition and appreciation functions.
  • Assist with the development, revision and distribution of the Volunteer Handbook and orientation as needed.
  • Miscellaneous projects as requested.
  • Onsite liasion for group volunteer opportunities as needed. 
  • Recognize new volunteer needs and identify creative solutions. 
  • Transport and handle foster animals (for event/recruitment purposes). 
  • Identify and devlop new and creative volunteer recruitment opportunities.
Qualifications

Demonstrated Abilities:

  • Ability to set priorities, take initiative, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Solid organizational, project management and people skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; comfortable coaching individuals as well as speaking to large groups.
  • Flexible schedule to attend evening and weekend events 
  • Reliable transportation, position require frequent local travel, mileage paid for travel outside of typical work route
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to consistently adhere to prescribed protocols.

Acquired Knowledge:

  • High School diploma and 2 years related experience is required with some college level coursework or a college degree preferred. 
  • Prior experience in volunteer recruiting and/or volunteer management. Equivalent experience in general recruitment acceptable.
  • Experience managing volunteer/staff in event setting is a plus. 
  • Microsoft Office proficiency and intermediate computer skills are required, including comfort with social media platforms.
