Description

I. Job Summary

As part of the group treatment team a Youth Specialist cares for and supervises the children in the agency’s Residential Village program by performing home-life training, assisting with and participating in therapeutic activities and completing supportive record-keeping functions.

II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as a member of a group treatment team with the responsibility for ensuring each child successfully completes the goals set forth in their treatment plan.
  • Care for and ensure children are closely supervised and monitored at all times.
  • Assist children with daily life activities.
  • Lead, supervise, and participate in recreational activities.
  • Properly dispense medication.
  • Provide leadership and maintain discipline of children; provide assistance with controlling disruptive behavior using agency approved methods of de-escalation and crisis intervention.
  • Collaborate with other staff in planning for the group or its individual members and participate in making decisions.
  • Keep required patient/child records; prepare and write reports.
  • Transport children as necessary in an agency vehicle.
  • Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, program’s Operation Manual and agency policies and procedures.

Qualifications

III. Basic Competencies

Education and Experience:  

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. 1 - 3 years of experience working in human services with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth males between the ages of 7 – 17 preferred.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • The behavior patterns of youth and methods of modifying behavior.
  • Group dynamics and sensitivity to individual members of the group.

Skills and Abilities Needed:

  • Relate to youth and gain their respect and confidence.
  • Lead and participate in indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
  • Maintain close proximity to residents to ensure proper monitoring and supervision.
  • Perform behavior management techniques to control aggressive behavior.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Exercise appropriate judgment in making decisions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Attend agency trainings and maintain necessary certifications, including First Aid, AED/CPR, NVCPI and others as determined by the agency.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.
  • Maintain a Michigan driver’s license and driving record that allows the operation of an agency vehicle to transport youth as needed. 

IV. Job Setting

The work environment described here is representative of that which an employee will typically encounter during a normal shift.  Work is performed in the office, clients' homes, treatment and residential facilities, courts and work sites. Frequent travel may involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions, unsanitary conditions in homes, communicable diseases and unsafe environments. Duties may require contact with persons who are hostile or abusive, or with children who are upset and confused. Work may involve standing, walking, or running for multiple hours during the work shift.
