The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist is responsible for coordinating, managing, and maintaining all patient records across all clinics, in accordance with state and federal regulations. This position will apply their knowledge and expertise to process all release of information in a timely and efficient manner ensuring accuracy and providing customers with the highest quality product and customer service. The HIM Specialist must always safeguard and protect the patient’s right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy and HIPAA regulations.

  • Receive and process requests for patient health information in accordance with FHLC policies and procedures.
  • Scan and index paper information into the patient electronic medical record (EMR.)
  • Gather information from records as authorized/required for insurance companies, audit requests, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security with all restricted information.
  • Respond to requests for patient records, both within the facility and by external sources, retrieving them and transmitting them timely and appropriately.
  • Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge procedures as necessary to provide requested records.
  • Review diagnosis codes as requested.
  • Perform audits as requested.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as handling fax and mail records requests.
  • Participate in projects related to HIM and medical records.
  • Monitor applicable reports as requested.
  • Develop and sustain good working relationships with other departments to assure that medical records can be properly maintained.
  • Must adhere to FHLC policies and procedures.
  • Regular and Reliable Attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • RHIA or RHIT strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in Health Information Management (HIM) or medical records in a healthcare setting required.
  • Previous experience working with an EMR required.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) preferred.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills required.
  • CPR certification required within six months of hire.

English and/or bilingual (English/Spanish) language required. Ability to read & interpret documents, reports & correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and/or individuals. Working Knowledge of MS Office.
