LJA Mission Statement

Located in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Lake Junaluska is a ministry of The United Methodist Church and plays a vital role by providing a location for training and renewal.  Each year Lake Junaluska will host over 200,000 guests who are engaged in spiritual training, recreation or renewal events and activities.  Our guests include religious, non-profit and secular groups.  We are also a residential and vacation community.

Essential Functions

  • Must possess excellent hospitality skills and a strong desire to foster an attitude of “exceeding guest’s expectations”.
  • Must maintain professional appearance wearing a clean, pressed uniform, including name tag.
  • Must be honest, reliable, and prompt in assisting guest through daily contact.
  • Performs daily cleaning, sanitizing and stocking of public restrooms and common areas. To include but not limited to;
    • Auditoriums
    • Recreation
    • Campground
    • Golf Course
    • Hotels
    • Business Offices
  • Responsible for removing trash, recycling and replaces liners.
  • Regularly cleans building interior and exteriors, pressure washes concrete and other surfaces, sweeps, mops, blows leaves, and picks up lost or discarded items.
  • Immediately reports maintenance repair issues to supervisor.
  • Ensures all lost and found items are turned in daily.
  • Uses chemicals to clean and sanitize, will be subject to heavy lifting and prolonged standing.
  • Works at different heights to clean walls and windows.
  • Responsible for vacuuming, scrubbing, shampooing, waxing, and polishing all floor types, porches and public areas.
  • Cleans hazardous spills such as bodily fluids.
  • Ensures all custodian closest and work areas are kept neat, clean and organized.
  • Constantly keep hallways, elevators, stairways, meeting rooms, and offices clean, including outside areas and grounds.
  • Assure appropriate appearance of all public areas and private rooms for guest comfort.
  • At times, strips beds, collects dirty linen, and remove trash from hotels.
  • Respond to two-way radio requests professionally and in a timely efficient manner.
  • Ability to move about campus to provide service in all assigned areas, utilizing a variety of transportation vehicles. I.e. golf cart, work van, and oversized work van.
  • Secures all doors and locks after finishing work in assigned buildings before or after hours.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures and reports any unsafe activities or conditions immediately to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and a minimum of 1 year relevant work experience.
  • Hospitality experience strongly desired.
  • Must have demonstrated good communication skills, and a commitment to providing responsive and timely customer service.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to changing needs, multiple task demands, and work structures.
  • Ability to manage time effectively to ensure all tasks are completed timely.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal or schedule formats.
  • Ability to effectively present job related information upon request to customers, and employees of the organization.
  • Proven organizational skills and interpersonal skills are required. 
  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of customer and employee questions.
  • Must be able to drive company owned vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from work.
  • Must be able to support the Christian mission and vision of Lake Junaluska.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, to include, days, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when needed and requested.

  • Adhere to the time clock policy when punching in/out for work shifts.

  • Able to work independently but operate within LJA policy guidelines using independent judgment.

Working Conditions

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity performing custodian type work activities with moderate to loud noise.
  • Indoor/outdoor work. Frequently exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Works with the fingers and perceives attributes of objects and materials
  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel; frequently moves about, able to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Able to lift or otherwise move or reposition objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work with a variety of chemicals, to include but not limited to; ammonia, disinfectants, floor finishers, waxes, removers and bleach based products without risk of irritation or allergic reaction.
  • Vision: must be able to see close and at a distance to perform daily duties.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
