Job Summary

As a support service specialist, the teacher aide shall provide ongoing support in curriculum activities and methodological techniques at both the individual and system level. Support the instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan. Performs all job responsibilities in a manner that embodies the NSSA culture.

Programmatic:

  • Support student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g. behavioral, motor development and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, administration and supervisor (s).
  • Support students’ progress and update programming in accordance with written IEP’s and following appropriate methods and materials for classroom instruction as determined by the teacher.
  • Daily data collection and cumulative percentage recordings of each students’ progress.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of all service documents and plans as related to clients assigned to work with. Implements all services as outlines in these documents and plan as instructed.
  • Support the teaching of appropriate skills and involves individual(s) supported in meaningful and valued activities.
  • Obtains knowledge of individual(s) supported desired outcomes and works to ensure they are integrated into daily activities.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all personal information concerning individual(s) supported.
  • Knows, advocates and respects the rights of student (s) supported.
  • Exhibits professional behavior towards the student (s) supported, families, coworkers, school personnel and supervisors.
  • Strictly adheres to confidentiality guidelines, as well as NSSA policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications and Benefits

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Required
  • Registered Behavior Technician Certification (RBT) preferred, or willingness to attain certification within 1 year.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License, acceptable driving history and proof of auto insurance as required.
  • Minimum of two years teaching aide experience with students with disabilities preferred.
  • New York State Certification in Special Education or Students with Disability a plus, or going to school for education/special education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis principles preferred.
  • Requires basic language, written and computer skills necessary for communication and documentation.
  • Ability and willingness to support individuals with challenging behavior.
  • Ability and willingness to assist individual in activities of daily living including toileting and other self-help skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb, ability to lift, push, pull and hold 50 pounds or more.
  • Responsible to report on time daily (Monday thru Friday) to work location (s) during operating hours 8:00 am to 3:30 pm over a 12 month period, unless otherwise specified by supervisor
