The Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) welcomes applications for the role of Airport Operations Control Center Specialist Until Position is Filled. This position is a Part-time (35 hours) a week position with full benefits. The position will be eligible for FT (40+ hours) a week on October 1, 2022.


Job Summary

This is technical work in receiving and transmitting a variety of calls to include normal, irregular and emergency calls for information and messages within the Airport Operations Control Center (AOCC) and in coordination with JAA personnel, airlines, tenants, TSA, FAA, and other agencies/groups at JAX. Work requires knowledge of emergency communications operating procedures, with the ability to operate various communication equipment including phones and radios. Applicants will be required to answer and respond to various types of calls from individuals and require assertiveness as well as sensitivity to ensure appropriate information is gathered and transmitted according to the situation. The scope of work is managed by standard operating procedures and departmental guidelines, but the employee has the latitude to take action according to the specific situation and must be able to adjust to situations not previously encountered. The employee must determine the nature of each call and follow the appropriate procedure based on training and experience. Work is performed at a console in a controlled environment.

Essential Functions

  • Receives calls from various airport stakeholders and JAA internal/external customers.
  • Operates various computer programs that support the Airport Operations Department and maintains business continuity throughout JAX.
  • Assists in the coordination and communications for normal and irregular airport operations at JAX and assists with operational coordination at the General Aviation Airports (VQQ, CRG and HEG).
  • Coordinates and communicates emergency situations as directed by department leadership and Standing Operating Procedures.
  • Coordinates airport operational events, requests, services, maintenance activity and/or AOCC personnel as needed.
  • Answers telephone calls from internal and external stakeholders. Monitors and operates radios, video surveillance cameras. Monitors HBS system, FIDS/BIDS/GIDS, FAA ATCT communications, and other AOCC equipment.
  • Serves as a source of information to the public and members of the Operations Department on a daily basis regarding policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Monitors the airport environment for hazardous weather and reports conditions as appropriate.
  • Provides administrative assistance for Airfield, Terminal and Landside inspections and other compliance inspections to ensure work requests are coordinated with JAA Maintenance Department.
  • Participates in emergency and safety training.
  • Maintains an operational understanding of the Hold Baggage System (HBS) in order to communicate problems to proper personnel. Monitors HBS problems and reports status to Operations staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of airport policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of computer applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) along with strong understanding the English language along with spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of all airport components and operational areas of responsibility (Airside, Terminal, Landside, Facilities, Law Enforcement/Security, TSA, Customs).
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and prioritize workload during high stress situations and emergencies.
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills in order to make informed decisions and outcomes.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices regarding aircraft ground operations, air traffic control communications, airport environmental conditions (local and regional hazardous weather), airport maintenance practices, airport emergency procedures, airport type recognition.




Required Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and
  • Two (2) years of recent experience working at an air carrier airport, domestic general aviation airport or domestic Fixed Base Operator in a relevant Airport Operations role  and
  • Four (4) years of office or administrative experience

The successful completion of a JAA internship will satisfy all the above experience requirements.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Associates' or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years direct customer service experience.


Licenses & Certifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge
  • Florida Class E Driver's License may be required and must be maintained

Physical Demands

Work requires sitting for prolonged periods of time and the ability to simultaneously communicate with the caller and enter information into a computer. Employees work shifts to cover a 22 hour per day, seven days per week operation.
