Located in White Plains, NY, and Manhattan, NY, The Windward School educates more than 900 students. Windward currently employs more than 450 faculty and staff members across four divisions and three campuses, giving employees a small, tight-knit community at their campus while feeling part of a larger organization.

The Windward School is a coeducational, independent day school dedicated to providing a proven, research-based instructional program for children with language-based learning disabilities. The multisensory curriculum is designed for students of average to superior intelligence who can benefit from the unique educational experience provided.

The Windward School is the preeminent school for the remediation of language-based learning disabilities for students in Grades 1-9. Through a multisensory, direct instruction curriculum, Windward helps students thrive academically, while enabling them to understand their learning styles, build confidence, and develop self-advocacy skills.

 

The Windward School is nationally recognized for its development of instructional programs and best-in-class teacher professional development and also has two divisions that support its mission The Windward Teaching Training Program and The Windward Institute.

 

 

  • The Windward Institute, launched in January 2020, is dedicated to increasing childhood literacy and disrupting the status quo in education through providing professional development for The Windward School, educators, clinicians, parents/guardians, and non-Windward students; advocating for the rights of students with language-based learning disabilities; building leading-edge education-research partnerships; and expanding the reach and impact of the proven methodology of The Windward School.

THE POSITION

The Windward School seeks a talented Director of The Windward Institute to work closely with the Head of School / Executive Director, board of trustees, and executive leadership team to provide strategic support, manage partnerships and expand upon the work of the Institute.

 

The Director of the Windward Institute will lead a team of five staff members to take the work of the Institute to the next level; identifying ways that The Institute can increase childhood literacy through training on Windwards methodologies, direct partnerships within the community, and expanding knowledge about the science of reading. The Director will work in conjunction with our Admissions and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion personnel to build relationships in communities of color and create strategic opportunities to diversify the student body at Windward.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE:

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, responsible for promoting all aspects of The Windward Institute
  • Work with the Executive Director and Associate Director of The Windward Institute to develop a strategic plan for the Institute and to set goals with measurable objectives that align with the mission, culture
  • Lead recruitment and retainment for Windward Institute personnel including the identification of Windward School faculty to present WI courses and lectures
  • Act as a champion and public spokesperson for The Windward Institute, collaborating with Communications Department on the content, branding, and communications strategy of Windward Institute materials, website, social media channels and other communications
  • Serve as a resource for the Board of Trustees, presenting updates on the work of The Windward Institute and all future plans
  • Review and analyze the current course catalog and curriculum, identifying gaps and areas of development
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to determine ways to gather, track and analyze WI statistical data
  • Manage projects relating to professional development in collaboration with the Director of the Windward School Teacher Training Program
  • Review and approve all spending for the Institute, working closely with the Chief Financial Officer to develop an appropriate operating budget
  • Establish and expand offerings for non-Windward students (Saturday classes, etc)
  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside organizations, universities, research institutes and other constituents of the Windward community.
  • Establish and expand upon relationships with Heads of Schools and Admission Directors of public and private high schools to support Windwards outplacement efforts
  • Cultivate all constituent groups including, but not limited to, parents, alumni, grandparents, trustees, former trustees, and corporations through individual meetings and group events
  • Continuously explore options to leverage technology to expand outreach and offerings of The Windward Institute, both locally and nationwide
  • Additional duties as requested by the Head of School and Executive Director of The Windward Institute.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelors degree, Masters degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in administration, educational research, curriculum work, etc.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Windwards mission and core values
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills; capable of working effectively with all constituents of The Windward School & The Windward Institute
  • Energetic, self-motivated, flexible, and adaptable; an effective relationship-builder
  • A strategic thought partner with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others
  • Computer fluency in Microsoft Office Suite; Blackbaud and Raisers Edge experience a plus
  • This position requires the flexibility to work additional hours, including occasional evenings and very infrequent weekends
