LJA Mission Statement:

The mission of Lake Junaluska is to be a place of Christian hospitality where lives are transformed through renewal of soul, mind and body.  

 

Located in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Lake Junaluska is a conference and retreat center that hosts over 50,000 overnight guests annually.  We have over 400 lodging rooms, a campground, and meeting space for up to 2,000 people.  All of our facilities are located on a scenic 1,200 acre campus which boasts panoramic views, abundant recreation opportunities, and a 200 acre lake.   Our market ranges from youth groups to affluent leisure guests primarily from the Southeastern US

 

Essential Functions

  • Oversee inventory and menu planning to provide the best possible meals for guests while maintaining costs at an acceptable level.

  • Working with managers and the personnel manager to hire, train, and coordinate staff to serve effectively our guests, control payroll costs, improve morale and reduce employee turnover.

  • Work with front desk staff and conference coordinator to maximize the number of guest meals served.

  • Implement and maintain an accurate record keeping system including cost controls and perpetual inventory.

  • Maintain sanitation standards to obtain grade A rating at all facilities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. 

  • Communicate management structure, policies and goals to employees to eliminate confusion and uncertainty.

  • Provide for care and maintenance of equipment and recommend purchase of new equipment, as needed.

  • Be knowledgeable on current trends in food preparation and nutrition as they relate to health and wellness.

  • Ability to solve problems in various situations.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in related field; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Hospitality background strongly desired.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common professional journals, financial reports and legal documents.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and members of the community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and staff. Communicate openly with conference coordinator and other directors to ensure an optimum level of service and a smooth operation. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, agencies and members of the business community.

  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format.

  • Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; to compute rates, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Computer Skills: Intermediate personal computer skills, including electronic mail, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

  • Organization Skills:  able to prioritize, organize and delegate assignments and also have the ability to multi-task.

Working Conditions

  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation, as well as the kitchen environment.

  • Physical Demands: Able to lift, carry or move items up to 30 pounds, stand, walk, crouch, bend and stoop, sit, reach (occasionally overhead such as cookware, utensils, etc.) and manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers; perceives attributes of objects and materials. Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product nature.  Able to stand on feet for prolonged periods of time as needed.

  • Moderate to loud noise environment (kitchen environment).

  • Ability to taste and smell for food preparation.

  • Ability to see close and at a distance (read recipes, monitor staff, etc.)

  • Good vision to allow for continuous work on computer to carry out daily tasks.

  • Hours: Monday thru Sunday; days/night/weekends/holidays and any overtime as required. Work schedule varies according to customer needs.  Some weekends/overtime required.
