Description

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Molecular Pathology Supervisor, the FISH Molecular Technologist (ASCP) performs with proficiency and understanding the tests and procedures assigned to the Molecular FISH department. The position is responsible for accurate reporting of results, quality control, training newer employees, equipment maintenance and all other duties assigned by the supervisor. The Tech is also familiar with intermediate laboratory chemistry including the usage of pH meters, molarity and normality. The FISH Tech is also responsible for adhering to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace.

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Conduct all areas of FISH wet lab preparation involving tissue and heme specimens
  2. Prepare reagents, buffers and probes according to FDA and LDT guidelines
  3. Perform analysis in all areas of FISH testing
  4. Assist with maintenance and documentation of departmental instrumentation
  5. Assist leadership with processing new tests and validation/confirmation testing
  6. Complete QA and QC documentation on a daily basis
  7. Troubleshoot issues and assist with updating laboratory procedures
  8. Perform general lab duties as needed
  9. Assist with inventory management
  10. Assist with training employees as needed
  11. May participate in weekend rotation
  12. Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Eligible for MB(ASCP) or CG(ASCP) certification
  2. 1+ year of clinical experience in a molecular or cytogenetic FISH laboratory required
  3. Experience using MS Office required
  4. MB(ASCP) or CG(ASCP) certified AND 1+ year of FISH analysis experience highly preferred

Physical Requirements

  1. Be able to lift 10+ lbs.
  2. Be able to stand for over 5 hours at a time
