Responsibilities

The Lead Tractor Trailer Mechanic directs the day to day activities of the terminal tractor trailer mechanics and determines work priorities when appropriate.  The Lead Tractor Trailer Mechanic also performs routine maintenance including scheduled preventative maintenance, diagnostics/troubleshooting and repair on tractors, trailers and tanks including:

  • Cummins engines
  • Eaton Auto Transmissions
  • ABS
  • Drum and disc brakes
  • Wheel ends, hubs, bearings and wheel seals
  • Tire and wheel alignments
  • Emergency shut offs
  • Pumps and compressors
  • Valves and plumbing
  • Samsara
  • Suspensions for air ride and spring ride
  • Peterbuilt equipment with ESA program
  • Build hoses
  • Utilitze maintenance and inventory software
  • Maintain maintenance records
  • Prepare hazardous material tanks for change in product
  • Fabricate and modify parts using welding equipment

 

Requirements and Environment

Mental and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, push, pull, reach, kneel, squat, grip and climb consistently.
  • Ability to remain reclined on concrete surface for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. at a time on a regular basis.
  • Ability to grip and torque variety of tools on a regular basis.
  • Ability to maintain extended visual attention, including depth perception.
  • Confined space entry into portal of up to 18” required for tank inspection and repair.
  • Ability to tolerate strong chemical smells, such as ammonia, nitric acid, and others.
  • Consistent visual focus on components of vehicles and equipment.

Working Environment and Conditions

  • The working environment is primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop and surrounding area where vehicles are parked.
  • Exposure to various chemicals, hazardous materials, and associated fumes.
  • Considerable amount of dust, dirt, grease and other by products of vehicle maintenance.
  • Caution necessary when using wide variety of tools, including but not limited to welding and torching equipment.
  • Occasional travel required to pick up or deliver equipment, as well as safety meetings and other events.
