About the Senior Program Manager Position  

The Senior Program Manager leads the programmatic and administrative oversight of one or more post-graduate legal Fellowship programs that place groups of lawyers and law students at nonprofit legal services agencies (host organizations) to provide civil legal services focused around a particular issue area or community. One of the post-graduate legal Fellowship programs the Senior Program Manager will have primary responsibility for is the Crime Victims Advocacy Program, a multi-million-dollar program funded by the Department of Justice. This national fellowship program will provide legal assistance and enforce victims’ rights for survivors in underserved, BIPOC communities. This is a wonderful opportunity for those experienced in grant and program management and legal aid, passionate about making a difference for survivors and underserved communities, and wanting to support other lawyers and law students to develop skills as public interest leaders. 

 

Qualifications

Specific Responsibilities 

 

Program Technical Expert 

  • Establishes strategic vision and goals for crime victims programming, including relationship development and management with key stakeholders for program development, fundraising, and program implementation.  

  • Develops and oversees the delivery of ongoing training and technical assistance to host organizations and Fellows on leadership, public interest work, program management and administration, including webinars and individualized assistance.  

  • Shapes workplans for program consultants and contractors, such as subject matter experts, evaluators and substantive training and technical assistance providers as assigned. 

  • Represents Equal Justice Works externally in meetings and conferences to advance program profile, growth, and innovation.  

 

Program Management 

  • Leads day-to-day program operations throughout the grant lifecycle to ensure successful start-up, coordination, implementation, delivery of program activities to achieve defined outcomes.  

  • Manages relationships with participating host organizations, law student Fellows, attorney Fellows, training, and technical assistance (TTA) providers, other program stakeholders, and program donors.  

  • In partnership with a Senior Grants Manager and Program Manager, plans and carries out subrecipient monitoring, including host organization and Fellow calls, desk reviews of programmatic and financial documentation, and host site visits. 

  • Monitors and analyzes program budget and outcomes data, prepares grant report narratives, and coordinates financial progress reporting to federal and private donors in conjunction with Institutional Advancement Unit and Finance Team. 

  • Maintains practice knowledge of all applicable regulations, grant terms and conditions, policies, and procedures to support organizational and subrecipient compliance. 

  • Maintains regular communications with donors, Senior Staff, the Institutional Advancement Unit, and other key program stakeholders. 

 

New Business Development  

  • Cultivates and strengthens strategic external relationships to advance programmatic and fundraising objectives 

  • In conjunction with the Institutional Advancement Unit/Finance and Senior Staff supports drafting of program concept notes, funding proposals and proposal budgets.  

  •  

Cross Organizational Efforts  

  • Engages as an expert contributor and leader in achieving cross-cutting organizational goals and initiatives, such as Leadership Development Training, Fellow Learning and Networking initiative, and organizational working groups and committees.  

  • Participates in inter-departmental and cross-departmental initiatives to advance unit and organization-wide projects and objectives. Works closely with Finance staff, Marketing and Communications Unit, Institutional Advancement Unit and Law School Engagement and Advocacy Unit. 

 

 

Staff Management  

  • Directly supervises and motivates Program Manager through active mentorship, guidance, training and facilitating peer-to-peer learning. Provides input into staff professional development.  

Qualifications 

 

Education & Experience 

  • Advanced degree required; JD preferred 

  • Minimum six  years of work experience with demonstrated commitment to public interest. 

  • Demonstrated experience with grant lifecycle (pre-award, award, and post-award). Familiarity with federal funding and funding compliance preferred. 

  • Prior experience working in a legal services organization, law school, law firm, or with crime victims; is familiar with crime victims’ rights enforcement for survivors in underserved and BIPOC communities. 

  • Experience in managing large-scale initiatives that get results, thinking creatively to resolve anticipated and unanticipated issues, tracking, and managing projects with multiple moving parts   

  • Advanced writing skills and experience with public speaking   

  • Supervisory experience
