Position Summary:

The responsibility of a Histology Technician Trainee is to train to prepare and process tissue samples for pathologists to exam and interpret. In this fast-paced laboratory, the trainee must be familiar with basic Histology and be able to conform to and follow all procedures, policies and quality control practices as directed. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace. The Histology Technician Trainee must adhere to strict HIPAA standards as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. A Histology Technician Trainee can move to a Histology Technician position once they have maintained quality and productivity standards for embedding and microtomy for 3 months.

Position Schedule: 3:00pm-11:30pm once competency is achieved. 

Essential Duties: A detailed training program is kept with the supervisor and will be reviewed with the trainee routinely.  It includes but is not limited to:

 

Histology Technician Trainee may perform any of the following duties or groups of duties:

 

  • Perform beginner, intermediate and advanced embedding while maintaining quality standards
  • Perform beginner, intermediate and advanced microtomy while maintaining quality standards
  • Demonstrate ability to QC embedding and microtomy
  • Stain tissue specimens with dyes or other chemicals
  • Trouble shoot stainer issues
  • Load/unload processor/stainer
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Eligibility for promotion to Histology Technician Trainee established by satisfying the following:

  • Conforming to established and new procedures instituted by the company
  • Maintenance of a safe and orderly work environment
  • Participation in holiday and on-call schedules as staffing requirements dictate.
  • Demonstration of flexibility and working a share of overtime or different shifts if necessary during staffing shortages or emergencies
  • Conforming to laboratory timekeeping procedures.  Keeping unexcused absences and late arrivals to a minimum.
  • Show ability to accept guidance and constructive criticism.  Display a professional and mature attitude.  Adhere to the laboratory dress code.
  • Agree to take the HT or HTL exam within 1 year from training completion
  • Successfully passing the HT or HTL ASCP exam

Qualifications/Experience:

  • HT or HTL(ASCP) eligible
  • Must meet minimum requirements for High Complexity Testing:
    • Associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology, or
    • At least 60 semester hours that include 24 semester hours of science courses (6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory chemistry, preferred
  • 1+ year of laboratory experience preferred
  • Internal transfer must be in good standing within their current department, having worked in that department for a minimum of 1 year, demonstrating high quality and productivity.  Transfer timelines will be established by the originating department’s supervisor.

  • Must have excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Must be able to prioritize job tasks and meet deadlines
