Scientific Protein Laboratories is a world leader in the development and manufacturing of naturally-sourced biopharmaceuticals.  SPL has recently embarked in a new direction of expanding and diversifying its product portfolio and pipeline by actively developing new technologies and products through both external partnerships and internal development efforts.  We have an immediate opening in Waunakee, WI (Madison area) for a Sr. Development Scientist to join our Scientific Affairs Innovation team.

The candidate will independently design and perform experiments for the purpose of developing new products and services for SPL.  The candidate will have the ability to innovate, create, and adapt solutions to solve complex technical problems and develop new technology to expand SPL’s product pipeline.


  • Develop processes for new products; Work primarily at the bench scale and apply new ideas, as well as ideas and technology pulled from the literature
  • Design, execute and interpret experiments/investigations
  • Develop scale-down processes for the purpose of executing viral inactivation studies on new and existing products
  • Perform product/chemical characterization using existing and new analytical methods
  • Author and review development reports, technical documents in support of regulatory submittals, and other documentation; prepare presentations, organize meetings, and collaborate with other scientists and departments. 
  • Interact with CROs and CMOs as a technical expert and coordinate contract work as needed
  • Maintain SPL patent status and participate in preparation of patent applications as needed
  • Train chemists and operators on newly developed processes and methods
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related sciences required
  • Minimum two or more years of pharmaceutical related experience
  • Industrial experience, especially in a pharmaceutical setting with understanding of CMC strategies and FDA regulatory fillings is highly desirable
  • A strong working knowledge of protein chemistry, oligonucleotides, protein purification and extraction from naturally-sourced materials is desired
  • Experience with methods for the biochemical and biophysical characterization of small and large molecules of various nature
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills are essential and ability to meet challenging project deadlines
