Editorial Assistant: Science

Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, and highly organized individual to support two editors. The Editorial Assistant (EA) will assist in the acquisition, development, and publishing of distinctive and outstanding books in mathematics, computer science, and neuroscience and will serve as a liaison both between authors and the Press, and between departments within the Press. The EA will take a central and collaborative role in the day-to-day management of the lists and will gain essential and detailed experience on all aspects of editorial and other processes involved in book publishing. The EA will be responsible for maintaining data integrity for all books on the lists, anticipating and contributing to the efficient flow of materials and information, and must be able to facilitate effective communication within the organization and beyond.

This is a full-time position with comprehensive benefits. While remote candidates may be considered for this opening, there is a strong preference for candidates who can work a hybrid schedule (e.g., some days a week working from home and in the Princeton office) for networking and professional development opportunities. Flexibility with in-office days will be permitted as the Press supports hybrid work.

Position Requirements:

  • A genuine interest in and intellectual engagement with the publication of scholarly books.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain an excellent professional demeanor and be able to convey information accurately. An evaluation such as a written work product may be required at the time of interview.
  • Excellent time-management, organizational, and record-keeping skills, and the ability to manage detail-oriented projects with overlapping deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently toward the collaborative and common goals of the lists, the editorial department, and the Press.
  • An interest in science preferred, but no proficiency is required.
  • Degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent experience.
  • Computer proficiency, including with databases, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Enthusiasm for collaboration, and commitment to professional codes of conduct; the Press’s may be accessed at https://press.princeton.edu/about/mission-values.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule (e.g., work from home and in the Princeton office).

PUP is a strong advocate for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the university press community. Individuals who are members of groups underrepresented in academic publishing (which is, according to research by Lee & Low, historically a majority white, straight, cisgender, and nondisabled industry) are encouraged to apply. The Press provides a comprehensive and affordable benefits package and is located in a historic building on Princeton University’s campus that is walking distance from downtown Princeton with easy car access to Route 1 and walking distance from the Princeton train station.

Base Salary: $40,000/year plus comprehensive benefits package. Starting salary may be negotiable based on relevant skills and prior experience.

Application Instructions:  Interested candidates should send a cover letter with salary requirements, and a résumé to PUP’s application website.

Due to application volume, only finalists will be contacted. For more information on Princeton University Press, visit http://press.princeton.edu/.
