Description

The Marketing Communications team creates and implements strategies to position Girl Scouts as the premiere leadership organization for girls in the 18-county region served by Girl Scouts Heart of Central California (GSHCC). The team creates and implements GSHCC’s marketing communications plans designed to: retain and recruit members; promote the council’s programs in a way that increases awareness and utilization of those programs and services; and foster a positive image of Girl Scouts with the media, public, funders, and other key stakeholders. This position is important to the council’s success and is part of the Marketing and Communications Department.

 

  • Create and implement annual strategic marketing and communications plans and budgets for the council, working in close collaboration with the Sr. Directors of Membership Recruitment and Marketing and other department leads. The plan is designed to meet the council’s goals and achieve success.
  • Increase the visibility and awareness of Girl Scouts in the 18-county region that GSHCC serves through media relations campaigns that reach key stakeholders and foster a positive image of Girl Scouts. Manage all aspects of media relations. Serve as the council’s media spokesperson along with the CEO.
  • Work collaboratively with internal team leaders and provide regular reports on marketing initiatives focused on achieving the council’s goals.
  • Oversees all marketing and communications projects to ensure deliverables are of high-quality and produced timely.
  • Create and execute innovative and integrated marketing and communications strategies, including traditional, digital and social media, to grow membership and increase participation in programs and services.
  • Foster positive relationships with key stakeholders, community leaders and partners, the media, and public to create long term relationships, increase visibility and build brand awareness.
  • Be a leader who cares for and supports the team members development
  • Write content and messaging that is clear, concise, and convincing for multiple channels. Edit and proofread copy following the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Oversee marketing and communications initiatives, including branding, advertising, special events, collateral materials, direct mail, email, sponsorship, etc.
  • Oversee contract negotiations for freelancers, marketing agencies, and vendors.
  • Lead and oversee all the organization’s digital platforms’ content, functionality, and ease of use.
  • Ensure team has needed systems, technology, and tools to work efficiently and produce good work product.
  • Lead brand champion committee: ensure consistency of key messages and brand management aligned with GSUSA.
  • Learn “the Girl Scout way” and use GSUSA as a resource for messaging, brand management and collateral materials.
  • Participate in GSHCC’s Leadership Team, comprised of all managers, directors, and senior directors in the council.
  • Manage and create paid advertising campaigns, negotiate contracts, and provide creative direction. Provide regular reporting on advertising efforts.
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with local media.
Qualifications

Technical skillset: This position requires competency in several computer systems. You will receive training on these systems and must be comfortable with technology, willing to learn new systems, and become knowledgeable and adept at using these systems.

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field required.
  • At least 10 years of experience in marketing and communications including creating and implementing results-driven strategic plans.
  • Minimum of six years in a management role; able to lead others to achieve shared goals.  
  • Having established long-term relationships with local media is key.
  • Collaborative leader that demonstrates an ability to cultivate and manage staff to succeed. Works collaboratively with all staff and can mobilize resources.
  • Strong public speaking and spokesperson skills. 
  • Strong writing skills: ability to write for a variety of audiences and platforms in a clear, concise and convincing manner. Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style; excellent proofreader and editor.
  • Articulate verbal communicator that conveys credibility, confidence and poise. Ability to speak to a wide range of stakeholders including the media, public, volunteers, funders and community groups.
  • Experience creating and implementing public and media relations campaigns that foster community support.
  • Brand management and ability to ensure consistency of messaging and grow and protect the brand.
  • Knows graphic design principles; can direct and manage designers to create high-quality products and achieve intended results.
  • Website management experience including ensuring functionality, ease of use, and relevance of content. Ability to interpret and use Google Analytics.
  • Experience with technology and systems including SalesForce, Adobe Experience Manager, Asana project management software or similar systems.
  • Experience managing social media platforms and using and interpreting metrics.
  • Ability to project manage and produce high-quality products according to deadlines.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred but not required.
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to recognize and respect the many forms of diversity.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to embrace the Girl Scouts mission, goals, values and council-driven programs.
  • Valid California driver’s license, a clean driving record, and proof of insurance.
  • Available for council-required events throughout the year.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to lift and carry 25 pounds.

 

WORK HOURS/TRAVEL

  • Must have access to reliable transportation; position will include some work-related travel.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel, including some overnight travel as needed (approximately 6 times per year).
