Shady Side Academy is a diverse and transformative PK-12 day and boarding school community that challenges students to think expansively, act ethically, and lead responsibly, and seeks an innovative, inspiring school leader to serve as its inaugural Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)

 

The CMO provides executive leadership for all Shady Side’s external marketing and branding efforts. Reporting directly to the President, the CMO participates on Shady Side’s Executive Leadership Team and develops and executes marketing strategies that articulate broadly the Academy’s unique value and advance student recruitment and retention, fundraising and donor relationships, alumni engagement, and overall brand reputation. 

 

With an eye to the future and an understanding of regional, national, and international educational markets, the CMO will ensure the school’s key messages are reflected in all external marketing communications, publications, and events, strategically highlighting work that promotes Shady Side’s mission and unique identity.

 

The CMO cultivates outbound awareness and inbound interest through creative digital pathways, effectively connecting with prospective families, alumni, donors and community partners. The CMO creates and implements strategic marketing plans and initiatives for admissions, development, summer programs and the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, including advertising plans, direct mail campaigns, print marketing materials, website marketing content, and social media marketing plans. The CMO manages all projects, agencies, vendors and budgets related to such marketing plans and initiatives. Oversight of all branding, licensing, and merchandising is also a primary responsibility.

 

The CMO works closely with the Director of Enrollment, Director of Communications, Director of Alumni & Development,, Director of Athletics, Director of Auxiliary Programs and the Executive Director of the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts, overseeing the branding for all broad-reaching external campaigns and initiatives at the Academy.

Relevant Leadership Experience 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of: 

  • Success in branding and marketing for leading organizations 
  • Meaningful innovation in support of an organization's mission and strategy 
  • Effective collaboration across a range of organizational divisions and departments
  • Identification and analysis of key marketing metrics and outcomes 
  • Effective communication with a range of stakeholders and constituencies 
  • Emotional intelligence, political savvy, and a sense of humor
  • Excellent writing skills in the areas of marketing, advertising, and development

  • Articulate broadly Shady Side’s unique value and market position 
  • Expand the school’s community outreach and engagement
  • Drive and increase inquiries for admissions and summer programs; ticket sales for the Hillman Center; and prospects for both annual and capital giving

 

Other Responsibilities  

  • As appropriate, serves as an advisor
  • Additional duties as assigned by the President
  • Extends beyond the job description to support the mission and strategic goals of the School

 

Requirements

  • Minimum of at least five years of administrative or executive leadership experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; important to be able to demonstrate evidence of ongoing professional development: continuing education, professional certifications, and/or an advanced degree 

 

Salary, Compensation, and Benefits

Salary, compensation, and benefits will be highly competitive in Shady Side’s regional independent school market and commensurate with experience. Housing and SSA’s tuition remission program are included as potential additional benefits.
