Position Objective:

The Conference Center Chief of Staff (CoS) works to oversee the community life of Summer Staff with a pastoral heart and professional mindset. They are to continually provide support and motivation to help summer staff focus on their ministry goals. They are to lead through example to ensure smooth execution of staff roles, community development, staff morale, and an open and engaging team dynamics in a manner consistent with MHA’s Mission, Vision, and Values. Note: This position is full-time from late May through mid-August, but 0-10 hours per week the rest of the year. 

 

General Qualifications:

The Conference Center Chief of Staff is a Ministerial position. Ministerial staff render their work, stewardship, relationships and behavior as evidence of being followers of Jesus Christ while embracing and affirming Mount Hermon Association, Inc.'s (“MHA”) mission, vision and beliefs. They are responsible for defining, cultivating and leading MHA’s Christian community, conference programs, and retreats. All staff join into our community life of prayer, worship and spiritual activity, including but not limited to staff meetings, attendance at programs, Bible Study, and staff gatherings.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Leadership community life summer staff
    • Recruit, interview, and train a Staff Counselor Team (minimum of four).
    • Develop and oversee training for Staff Counselors in partnership with Family Ministries Director for spiritual and job specific direction, providing them the opportunity and tools for success.
    • Oversee Staff Counselors, providing spiritual and job specific support for them as they spiritually care for summer staff, support Family Ministry Program Elements, and develop community life activities for Family Camp summer staff; through weekly training and intentional mentoring.
    • Meet every-other week with the Family Ministries Director for a regular one-on-one.
  • Community and Spiritual Life Development
    • Responsible for coaching Conference Center Summer Staff, helping provide resources for community development, spiritual growth, and when needed; conflict resolution to ensure healthy community living.
    • Work with the Family Ministries Director to put together and facilitate Summer Staff Training Week to help prepare staff to flourish in their community.
    • Send out informational email to all summer staff before arrival (what to pack, check-in days, etc).
    • Help coordinate arrival and departures of summer staff.
    • Coordinate all roommate assignments for summer staff.
    • Oversee and facilitate weekly community life events for summer staff; running at least four Saturday activities during the summer.
    • Put on a weekly gathering where Conference Center Summer Staff can grow in their faith, worship life, and as a community. Work with the Family Ministries Director to schedule speakers/worship leaders for that weekly gathering.
    • Make sure each summer staff member is met for a discipleship grounded one-on-one during the summer.
    • Manage ER runs, food deliveries, or other medical or mental health needs for summer staff as they arise.
    • Manage the day-to-day operations of the residence hall, including key distribution, room changes, and building maintenance requests.
    • Work with Family Ministries Director and HR to manage, document, and oversee community coaching conversations and personal improvement plans when needed.
  • Partner with the Family Ministries Coordinator to provide key support to Family Camp Programming
    • Make a Shuttle Driver Schedule for the summer (Train Day, pancake breakfasts) and communicate with all drivers their assigned day/time. (Drivers: CoS, Family Min. Coord, Program Leads, Staff Counselors)
    • Every Sunday work with Staff Counselors to help set-up and tear down the Carnival as instructed by the Family Ministries Coordinator.
    • Every Tuesday work with Staff Counselors to help set-up and tear down all aspects of Zumba and S’mores in partnership with the program team as instructed by the Family Ministries Coordinator.
    • Every Friday work with Staff Counselors to help set-up and tear down all aspects of Mall Party in partnership with the program team as instructed by the Family Ministries Coordinator.
  • Assign Bonus Job Needs and Requirements for Summer Staff
    • Work with Conference Center Department Leads to develop a bonus job schedule for summer staff.
    • Check in weekly with Department Leads to see if Summer Staff is showing up to and performing in their bonus job roles.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Supervisor

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Conference Center Staff Counselors

Qualifications

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified (before arriving at camp)

 

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience in leadership roles preferred.
  • Prior or current experience developing and leading large groups or teams.
  • Previous experience at MHA preferred.
  • Experience in recruiting a large seasonal workforce is welcomed.

Must have a deep and growing relationship with God, active involvement in a local church, Christ-centered Biblical worldview adhering to MHA's "Statement of Faith" and "Standards of Conduct" and a commitment to maintaining healthy relationships and accountability.

  • Comfortable interacting with staff, management at all levels and with guests of all ages.
  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Mature understanding and respect for authority and peers, as well as camp guidelines and principles.
  • Ability to lead and teach with patience and clear instruction.
  • Ability to engage in active listening.
  • Ability to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
  • A "roll up your sleeves" attitude and a joyful willingness to step in to do whatever needs to be done.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and hiking. 

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must agree to and comply with MHA’s employee driving guidelines for MHA-owned vehicles and use of personal vehicles for business purposes.
  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in MHA’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
