Legal Aide/Intern

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.  To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.  



The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is one of the largest public health agencies in the world. Legal Affairs within the Office of General Counsel (OGC) at the DOHMH provides legal support to the agency and its many public health programs that serve more than 8 million New Yorkers. 



Legal Affairs within the Office of General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a law student to assist in developing a legal/health partnership to assist community members accessing the DOHMH Health Action Center (HAC) sites.   



  • Develop overall workplan for launching a legal/health partnership in spring 2022 (by December 20, 2022) to include the following steps: 

  • Create list of legal/health partnership experts in service of development of legal/health partnership at DOHMH health action centers 

  • Schedule and conduct meetings for discussions with these experts 

  • Assess feasibility of a pilot legal/health partnership at one or more of DOHMH health action centers 

  • Develop set of criteria for HACs for needs assessment 

  • Develop set of criteria for HAC readiness 

  • Develop list of legal services possible partners 

  • Define areas of service (housing, family law, immigration) 

  • Define specific services needed (court intervention, legal advice) 

  • Define time required at site(s) 

  • Assist with other tasks as requested 

  • Familiar or previous experience using Westlaw 

  • Familiar or previous experience with duties described above 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel, Teams, and Adobe Acrobat 

  • Previous customer service experience 

  • Interest in public health. Knowledge of and comfortable with remote applications (Zoom, WebEx, Teams, etc.) 


Selected candidate must be able to provide proof of COVD-19 vaccination. 



Remote position or in-person at Gotham Center, 42-09 28th Street LIC, NY 11101 



16 hours per week. This temp position will be funded through December 30, 2022, with possibility of extension. 



$22 per hour. Compensation for the position is hourly, with a rate commensurate with experience.
