Under the supervision of the Assistant Camp Director, the Discovery Program Manager oversees all program units, activities, and events, ensuring they are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers age and abilities. Supervises the unit and support staff and supports the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director in camp administration.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Program

  • Promotes progression in activities and experiences, considering age level, abilities, and interests of campers, specifically in the Discovery programs
    • Provides resources and guidance to Camp Leaders in implementing the Girl Scout program and the specific unit program
    • Ensures that an evaluation of unit goals and objectives, a listing of all awards started and earned and a letter to parents from the unit staff are completed for each program and session.

 

Supervision of Camp Staff as assigned

  • Understands, follows, and interprets Personnel Policies and Practices for camp staff.
  • Provides feedback and guidance to staff based on regular observations
  • With the assistance of the Assistant Camp Director, conducts periodic evaluations and supervisory conferences
  • Assists camp staff in completion of their duties as needed

 

Assistance with Camp Operations

  • Assists with planning and implements the camp schedule with the other managers prior to the first day of the session
  • Ensures mealtimes are safe and adequately supervised
  • With the Camp Directors, follows through and files camper discipline reports each session
  • Assumes the Camp Directors duties during their absence as needed and assigned
  • Plans, conducts, and participates in pre-camp and in-service trainings
  • Conducts staff meetings to plan and delegate assignments; keeps staff informed of changes, policies, and procedures
  • Takes personal responsibility for maintaining order and cleanliness in all camp areas
  • Assigns staff to programs and living units each session

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Attends administrative staff meetings
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
  • Assist with camp healthcare needs as needed, including camper check-in, supervision of ill campers and non-emergency transport
  • Drive campers, staff, and equipment for trips off camp property as needed
  • Assist with camper units as needed, including staff coverage
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp after each session and during pre-camp and end-of-season cleaning period.

Qualifications: (Minimum Qualifications and Experience)

  • Minimum age 21 desired
  • One year of supervisory experience desired
  • One year of camp or programming experience
  • CA drivers license with clean driving record and a minimum of five years driving experience
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR desired
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination unless a qualifying exemption is needed

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training and experience in working with children
  • Knowledge of arts activities, nature activities, and basic outdoor skills
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels
  • Ability to effectively and tactfully supervise adults
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills

Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate in English to provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers

 

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

We are an all-girls camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with girls for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
