BWH Partial Hospital Program Social Worker/Float

Description: Provides mental health and substance abuse treatment services to adults and adolescences in a partial hospital program setting. Under the supervision of the Ambulatory Service Manager, the Social work/float will primarily run therapeutic groups with adults and adolescent but will work with assigned cases and be responsible for discharge planning when deemed necessary

The Social work/float is responsible running therapeutic groups for the adult dual partial hospital program, the adult mental health program, and the adolescent partial hospital program. There responsibilities include but are not limited to: running therapeutic groups, documenting group attendance, completing biopsychosocial assessments and covering caseloads when clinicians are absences.  The Social work/float will be required to travel to all PHP sites.

Qualifications:   Advanced degree (MSW/Med) is required.  Independently licensed a plus.   Experience with providing treatment services to adults/adolescents with mental health, substance use and co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.  Experience providing group treatment.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and department standards that reflect Bournewood and Medicaid/Medicare standards for the operation of an adult and adolescent partial hospitalization program.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in running therapeutic groups for adults and adolescence.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in procedures and patient care based on established theory; maintains quality assurance standards for patient care.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members regarding patient needs and treatment plan.
  • Utilizes crisis intervention techniques when needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the current version of the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders principles and techniques for on-site reviews and program evaluations
  • Participates in committees within the organization and attends meeting as scheduled for hospital.
  • Other functions as requested by supervisor


Essential Competencies:

  • Knowledge of insurance parameters, level of care criteria for admission, continued stay and discharge as well as exclusion criteria for each level of care.
  • Understanding of bio-psychosocial issues and knowledge of treatment modalities and evidence based treatments for mental illness and substance use disorders for all ages
  • Awareness of cultural, gender, and age related issues with various patient populations
  • Meets and maintains required standards of practice including updating license and educational requirements of the discipline in which licensed.
  • Is competent in level of knowledge and understanding of hospital, policies/practices, Ambulatory policies and procedures, external agencies such as the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), Joint Commission (JC) and, if applicable, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Departments of Mental Health (DMH) and Public Health (DPH).
  • Is competent in delivering patient care that is trauma informed and patient centered. As indicated by:
    • Provides care that is kind, collaborative and compassionate.
    • Able to defuse power struggles.
    • Appropriate assessment of clients for a history of trauma
    • Recognize/assess a range of trauma-related behaviors
    • Implement trauma-sensitive interventions with people served



  • Responsible for running therapeutic groups
  • Responsible for covering full caseloads when clinicians are on vacation or out sick
  • Responsible for completing intakes when needed
  • Attending team meetings as directed
  • If independently licensed may provide clinical supervision to unlicensed/LCSW staff


Minimum Qualifications:   Advanced degree (MSW/Med) is required.  Independently licensed a plus.   Experience with providing treatment services to adults/adolescents with mental health, substance use and co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.  Experience providing group treatment.
