BWH Health Information Specialist

 

Description:   To support the Health Information Services Department through a variety of clerical, technical and related support services. Special emphasis is on responding to requests for patient information, assisting with preparing for audits and maintenance of the file area. Performs other duties as directed.

 Openings: Part Time - 20 hours per week afternoons

 Qualifications:   Candidates must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of governmental, accrediting and regulatory requirements is preferred. Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient related information, ability to work independently with little direct supervision. Experience working in a Health Information Services Department is preferred.

Qualifications

 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Processes requests for patient information in a timely manner ensuring a proper authorization to release information is on file
  • Files all medical records in correct sequence
  • Retrieves records for physicians and staff when requested to facilitate record completion process
  • Pulls medical records for studies, surveys and reviews
  • Processes requests for court appointed attorneys in a timely manner
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

Essential Competencies: 

  • Knowledge of all governmental, accrediting and regulatory requirements pertaining to medical records
  • Demonstrates knowledge of release of information guidelines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient related information
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
  • Strong interpersonal, clerical, organizational skills
  • Must have sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate with patients, their families and outside parties is required.
  • Knowledge of computers, medical terminology with specific familiarity with psychiatric terminology is helpful
  • Maintains a calm and respectful demeanor while handling difficult people or situations
  • Responds to persons served with kindness, respect and compassion
     

Minimum Qualifications: 

One to two years of health information services experience preferred.

 

Physical Criteria:  

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to sit for up to 7 hours
  • Must be able to climb stairs without difficulty
  • Must have good visual acuity
  • Must be able to read handwriting of varying styles
