Under the direction of the Director of Community Engagement, the Communications Specialist works to develop MPact’s brand consistency and build brand recognition among existing and potential donors and partners, both individual and organizational. They develop, manage, and implement communications strategies, programs, and materials to support MPact’s objectives for a wide range of HIV, health, and human rights stakeholders at all levels. This includes managing communication platforms and delivering organizational messaging at both grassroots and government levels. The Communications Specialist must be able to take initiative, manage their time, and work with MPact’s diverse constituents. Successful candidates will be collaborative, creative, and strategic. They will possess exceptional communication skills and be adept at utilizing social media.




In close coordination with the Director of Community Engagement, the Communications Specialist will implement and support communication initiatives. The Communications Specialist will:

  • Plan and implement communication strategies.
  • Manage social media accounts and develop content
  • Draft media releases, and supervise listings and media kit development.
  • Initiate, plan, and record media engagement of the company.
  • Oversee monthly correspondences.
  • Edit company communication materials.
  • Develop and consolidate relations with traditional media and social media influencers.
  • Develop promotional communication materials such as print-outs, pamphlets, videos and webpages in coordination with staff.
  • Foster and support MPact’s online community






Training and Experience


Bachelor’s degree in social science or liberal arts and a minimum of 1 year of experience in community engagement/communication OR 4 additional years can be substituted for the degree (a total of 5 years of experience in community engagement/communication); excellent English-language written and oral communication skills (as evidenced by recent, first-authored writing samples). In addition, the Communications Specialist must demonstrate a track record developing campaigns with a diverse range of gay, bisexual, queer and trans men; a strong commitment to redressing discrimination and persistent disparities in global funding and access to HIV-related programming among key populations, particularly populations from the global south and outside the United States.  





Must have a basic knowledge of global HIV, health and human rights issues affecting gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, especially for those living in low- and middle-income countries; sexual health and social concerns of key populations including key populations living with HIV; and effective communication and diplomacy techniques.




Must have the ability to implement effectively a portfolio of culturally diverse community-led HIV-related communications;  speak comfortably on behalf of gay and bisexual men and other key populations; design, implement and evaluate communication activities; Adept at utilizing various social media platforms to communicate and mobilize; seek communication and social media partnerships with country, sub-regional and regional networks of gay and bisexual men worldwide; sensitively work with advocates in low- and middle-income countries; maintain strategic and collegial relationships between MPact, other global civil society networks, international NGOs, bilateral, multi-lateral organizations, and governmental partners; demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and professionally with volunteers, paid staff, and professionals from a variety of disciplines; work independently with minimal direction; meet frequent deadlines in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment; respond with sensitivity to diverse, disenfranchised groups; report and orally present MPact accomplishments in appropriate venues; and write clearly. Proficiency in languages other than English a plus.



The position requires daily use of personal computer and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper. Frequent international and domestic travel is required, along with frequent virtual global meetings.  In addition, the Communication Associate will be based in California – United States.
