Position Description 

The Museum seeks an experienced, enthusiastic and process-minded leader to grow and oversee public programs. The Director of Public Programs (DPP) joins the Museum at an exciting time of transition and expansion. With new leadership and a new vision for impact, the Museum is committed to offering compelling programming content to our industry, professional and student audiences and to expand our reach to more cultural consumers at a local and a national level. The DPP will bring focus, energy and strategy to strengthen the role and the voice of the Museum in national conversations about the built environment and its impact on our lives and communities especially in the realms of climate, equity and innovation. With support from the Vice President of Education and Engagement, the DPP conceptualizes, develops, implements, and evaluates public programs, summits, awards, fellowships and professional learning series.    

This position reports to the Vice President of Education and Engagement and works collaboratively across Museum departments and with other members of the Education & Engagement team. The DPP embodies the values of the Museum and is a leader in building an inclusive and equitable environment for colleagues and visitors. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Design and develop bold, unique and relevant programs, both in structure and content, and supporting resource materials that are rooted in industry best practices  
  • Partner with the VP of Education ad Engagement to outline annual content focus, programmatic goals, and evaluative metrics for NBM signature programs including Spotlight on Design, Climate ABC and Equity in The Built Environment; and for other exhibition-driven initiatives 
  • Serve as project lead for large scale industry focused activations, summits and symposiums 
  • Lead the development and implementation of the National Building Museum fellowship and industry professional continuing learning programs 
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with industry and academic leaders in applicable and relevant fields 
  • Identify qualified and diverse expert program participants from both industry and academia for inclusion in various summits, panels, workshops and lecture series 
  • Represent the National Building Museum in relevant panels, discussions and conferences 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Qualifications

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in architecture, urban planning,  and/or other fields related to the building arts strongly preferred   
  • Program development and design experience 
  • Professional Learning and/or Adult Education development, facilitation and evaluation experience strongly preferred 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Staff management experience preferred 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail with an ability to meet deadlines, manage projects and prioritize multiple tasks.   
  • Self- motivated with the ability to work both alone and in groups 
  • High energy and a “roll up your sleeves” attitude  
  • Actively engaged and informed in industry best practices in a changing landscape of public engagement practices, both virtually and in-person 
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills 
  • Flexible, professional, friendly manner 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends  
  • A love for learning and a sense of humor
