BWH Nurse Supervisor

Description: Responsible overall Hospital functioning on all shifts beyond the usual business hours.   Collaborates with Admissions to ensure patient placement for care .  Collaborates with support staff to coordinate necessary services.    Has functional authority for staffing and scheduling patient units.  Must be familiar with the Six Core Strategies© and have experience in efforts to reduce the use of restraints and seclusion. Incumbent must be familiar with or have worked in a treatment environment that is recovery oriented, trauma informed, collaborative and strives to prevent coercion. Incumbent will participate in hospital committees, provide supervision for unit staff and participate in hospital initiatives to improve safety for staff, persons served and families. The nurse manager is a member of the nurse leadership team and participates in developing and implementing plans to improve nursing practice in the treatment milieu.

Qualifications: Registered Nurse in Massachusetts is required. BSN is required and MSN is preferred. Experience in psychiatric and mental health nursing and CPR certifications are required. Demonstrated leadership in prior experience. Knowledgeable with the 6 core strategies. Experience in leading staff in utilizing best practices in mental health. Ability to provide guidance for staff in meeting regulatory requirements. Ensures staff delivers quality care to persons served. Implements practices and supports trauma informed care. Maintains staffing to meet established budgets. Responsible for care delivered 24 hours per day.

Job Description

Essential Functions:      

 

  1. Assumes overall responsibility for assigned shift.           
  2. Evaluates staffing patterns and relocates staff to other units as necessary.  Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer as necessary.
  3. Receives and documents call outs and works to fill shifts as needed. Mandates staff if necessary to fulfill safe staffing requirements.
  4. Makes rounds on all units on grounds.  Supervises activities of staff.   Assists in direct care on units as necessary. 
  5. Advises unit staff on policies and procedures and provides information to staff on new policies and procedures as needed.
  6. Provides input to Nurse Managers for staff evaluations.
  7. Models trauma informed care approaches to staff on units
  8. Fosters the use of de-escalation preferences and assists staff in using same to minimize restraint utilization
  9. Assists unit staff in problem solving during crisis, actively facilitates debriefing activities immediately after event
  10. Coordinates the use of telemedicine program for new admissions and restraints as necessary.                      
  11. Communicates with Administration regarding incidents, emergencies and staffing problems. 
  12. Informs Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Office, and Administrator on Call of emergency medical problems, discharges, AMA’s, elopements and significant employee accidents.              
  13. Coordinates disaster plan
  14. Communicates to Chief Nursing Office, department heads, DOCs and the Administrator on Call any critical concerns or problems.
  15. Ensures all incidents occurring on his/her shift are documented on appropriate report form, all information is accurate and complete and turned into administrator prior to end of his/her shift
  16. Assists Intake Coordinator in the assessment of clinical appropriateness of potential new patients for admission.
  17. Collaborates with Admissions regarding placement of patients in hospital.
  18. Updates supervisor log including the census and other pertinent information regarding patients and staff for follow up, at change of shift.
  19. Has the responsibility for ensuring all staff are professional in their interactions with patients, visitors, and co-workers 
  20. Pursues own professional development.
  21. Demonstrates responsibility and dependability through attendance, punctuality, and proper use of earned time
  22. Any other duties as assigned by Chief Nursing Officer.
                        
     
    Essential Competencies:
     
  23. Ability to direct, guide, and supervise unit staff.
  24. Understanding of bio-psychosocial issues and knowledge of treatment methods for mental illness and chemical dependency.
  25. Awareness of cultural and age related issues with adults, adolescents, and geriatric populations.
  26. Meets educational standards and licensing requirements of RN including competency in CPR.

  3. Must be able to climb stairs.
  4. Must be able to assist with carrying immobile patient.
  5. Must be able to participate in medical and behavioral emergency procedures.
