GENERAL PURPOSE: Accounting Specialist 

Under the direction of the Controller, the Accounting Specialist performs professional accounting and related statistical work in compiling, reviewing, auditing and maintaining fiscal information necessary to the support of the financial management system. Performs professional accounting work in accordance with prescribed accounting system and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and OMB A-133 Circular


  1. Has a combination of knowledge in Accounts Payable, Purchasing, Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets and all general functions of the accounting profession.
  2. Has knowledge of the function of the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Reports
  3. Performs statistical & financial analyses regarding encounters, staffing etc.
  4. Prepares Financial Reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations
  5. Prepares the annual budget with information presented from departments and management
  6. Performs statistical reports for encounters monthly
  7. Completes Provider Productivity and analyzes productivity for the month
  8. Prepares monthly reconciliations, follows monthly closing procedures and analyzes monthly encounters and revenues to assure everything is accurately reported
  9. Maintains, prepares, calculates and analyzes Company incentive program
  10. Prepares Journal entries to record revenues, expenditures and closing entries to general ledger
  11. Prepares Journal Entries for month-end closing in the accounting system MIP
  12. Prepares allocation for Fringe Benefits and Retirement monthly for financials
  13. Performs general ledger account reconciliations for monthly financials, audit, or any special reports
  14. Responsible for reconciling all bank accounts and completes all bank reconciliations
  15. Assists in the preparation of Financial Statements
  16. Responsible for the preparation of the annual Medicare Cost Report, generating all financial and statistical data required for annual Medicare cost report preparation
  17. Communicate with Billing Department on process issues that impact finance
  18. Assist in preparation of Financial Tables of the Annual UDS and OSHPD reports
  19. Prepare A/R receivable for 340B aging and other receivables
  20. Assists in maintaining financial records, accounts and other documentation
  21. Utilizes the Accounting System (MIP) and Purchasing System (Workforce) in order to develop financial trends and create special reports
  22. Maintains adequate documentation to satisfy audit requirements and OMB A-133 audit requirements
  23. Prepares, record, and reconciles prepaid accounts and asset acquisition and depreciation
  24. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  25. An integral part of the annual financial audit, PPS Rate Audits, or any other related finance audits
  26. Must be able to meet deadlines and complete reports in a timely manner and have the ability to flex time when needed
  27. Assists the Controller/Chief Financial Officer on special analysis reports and duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Accounting Specialist 

  1. Graduate from four (4) year college or university with a degree in Business, Finance required or Accounting or equivalent (4) years accounting experience required
  2. Prior experience in accounting work in a similar position is preferred
  3. Knowledge of basic governmental accounting principles
  4. Knowledge of fund accounting for non-profit organizations
  5. Knowledge of computer principles and applications to business and accounting functions, including internal control procedures
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS: Accounting Specialist 

  1. Must have neat and legible handwriting
  2. Must be able to interact with patients courteously and calmly
  3. Ability to communicate well with the public
