WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for a seasonal Behavioral Intervention Specialist who possesses the empathy, flexibility, and compassion to provide social-emotional and behavioral support for our campers and coaches throughout the 2024 summer camp season. The ideal candidate has an understanding of diverse youth development programs (after school programs, summer camps, sports teams), prior experience providing behavioral / mental health services in an educational or recreation-based setting, and a passion for our mission and values. This would be a seasonal, salaried position from Early May - August 23, 2024.

The Behavioral Intervention Specialist provides on-site and on-call behavioral support and conflict resolution strategies for our camp leadership teams and campers. The Intervention Specialist will offer daily support to our seven camp locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx through a combination of site visits and camper observations, 1-on-1 sessions with camp staff and campers, as well as ongoing communication via calls, emails, and internal messages. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The Behavioral Intervention Specialist will be devoted to providing our campers (and team) with a support system outside of the Directors for behavioral issues, coping mechanisms and a listening ear. You will work alongside the Camp Director and Assistant Directors to help our teams identify the appropriate ways to address behavioral or mental health concerns that may arise among campers and staff.

You should have advanced knowledge of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), effective communication, and conflict resolution. You will be tasked to provide services to assist in growing campers socially, emotionally and intellectually. You will be observing and interacting with campers and the staff on a day to day basis to make sure their needs are being met and they feel comfortable challenging themselves. We are looking for someone who can think outside the box, helping to create strategies and new ideas to make sure our counselors and Division Leaders are equipped for the summer to help grow and support our campers.

  • During on-site training, provide scenario-based training to camp teams to strengthen staff knowledge of positive behavior interventions & supports, mental health practices, and stress management strategies

  • Design and implement behavior support tools for campers; model and share with camp team

  • Provide support to Camp Directors and camp leadership staff by answering their questions or concerns regarding camper needs

  • Be a listening ear for staff needs and stressors; be available for calls and 1:1 meetings at the camp sites

  • Provide on-site direct support for behavioral issues, including 1:1 camper meetings and group observations

  • Work on an individual basis as needed to reinforce appropriate choices regarding camper / staff behavior, and create behavioral plans

  • Assist Camp Directors in preparing parent communications and leading meetings regarding their campers behavioral / social emotional needs

  • Be a key resource for camp leadership teams in problem solving staff/camper issues and parental concerns

  • Maintain/file all documentation and incident reports regarding behavioral concerns and plans for campers

Schedule & Travel Expectations:

  • This is a full-time seasonal position that requires in-person work and the ability to use public transportation to travel between Manhattan (downtown & uptown areas), Brooklyn (Greenpoint & Park Slope), and the Bronx (Riverdale)

  • Weekly schedule:

    • You’ll create a weekly schedule of camps to visit in collaboration with the Camps Supervisor

    • You’ll spend 70-80% of the week (3-4 days) conducting observations at camp sites and providing on-site support to campers, staff, and camp leadership

    • You’ll be on-call during the hours of camp operations to speak with camp leadership about emerging situations

    • You’ll dedicate at least one full day per week to completing reports related to camp incidents at the main office

CAMP INFORMATION:

  • Pre Summer Commitment - Starting in Late April through June - 10 to 15 hours per week

    • Attend Camp leadership meetings, Camp Director check ins, camp trainings and more

  • Camp Session Dates: June 17th - August 23th 2024 (10 weeks)

Compensation Range:

This is a part-time, seasonal position based in New York City. Behavioral Intervention Specialists must be available to work part time from May - June (range of 8-15+ hours per week) to complete pre-summer work expectations. Behavioral Intervention Specialists must be available to work full time from late June to the end of August to oversee camp operations.

Pre Summer Compensation:

  • Monthly stipends ranging from $200-300 per month

    • Consists of a May Pre Summer Stipend and June training bonus

Summer Compensation: 

  • Biweekly salary payments from July - August 2023

  • Total salary range of $8,000 to $9,000 depending on prior years of experience

    • Without the pre summer training stipend

    • Based on 10 weeks of camp. If you work less weeks, the total summer salary is reduced

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

Our ideal candidate would meet some or all of the following qualifications:

  • Must have completed a physical exam and TB test within one year of the camp dates, pass NYS and national background checks, and be CPR, First Aid, and AED certified

  • Currently pursuing or have recently completed a Master’s in Social Work, Counseling, or Clinical Psychology

  • Possess 2+ years of experience working in a behavioral/intervention specialist setting with children and adults

  • Be able to establish and maintain strong working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents, and caregivers

  • Communicate in a timely and professional fashion with parents, caregivers, kids and staff across organization-wide communication channels (Slack, Email, Text, Google Calendar, etc.) and be able to interpret and understand both written and oral instructions

  • Attend and help facilitate training sessions before and during the summer
