Senior Mental Health Counselor Adult Partial ~ Lowell

 Bournewood Health Systems has established partial hospital programs in the Lowell area, and we are seeking a Senior Mental Health Counselor for our Adult Partial Hospitalization Programs who will participate as a member of the treatment team. The incumbent’s prime responsibilities will be maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, maintaining the program schedule, coordinating intakes, facilitating psycho-education groups and orienting patients to the program.

Qualifications: Four-year degree, strong group therapy skills, ability to assess mental status, previous experience with case management and aftercare coordination are required.  Previous partial hospitalization experience is preferred.

Job Description


Essential Functions:

  • Leads daily psycho-education groups
  • Communicates findings and progress of group, individual, and family therapy and discharge recommendations/planning to treatment team.
  • Maintains progress notes in charts and completes group notes for all groups performed.
  • Assists the clinicians with appropriate case management and arrangement of aftercare appointments with providers and informs patient.
  • Documents all clinical and collateral contacts and case management activities in a timely and professional manner.
  • Complies with all statues and regulations relevant to the maintenance of clinical standards in the Commonwealth, e.g. mandated reporting, duty to warn, confidentiality, human rights.
  • Ensures that all medical records are organized per hospital policies and procedures. Closes chart and sends to medical records in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in patient admission and discharge

  • Maintains professionalism of role and participates in activities to maintain and increase knowledge in role as evidenced by:
  1. Pursues ongoing learning through in-services, courses, and/or reading in order to better understand and meet the needs of patient
  2. Makes use of available supervision.
  1. Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Essential Competencies:

  • Knows Hospital, department and unit policies and procedures, DPH, JC, and DMH Regulations regarding patient rights and clinical interventions.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric and substance use conditions and treatment methods
  • Knowledge of group facilitation.
  • Is competent in delivering patient care that is trauma informed and patient centered. As indicated by:
    • Provides care that is kind, collaborative and compassionate.
    • Able to defuse power struggles and doesnt need to win.
    • Monitors for early warning signs of upset/agitation
    • Offers a range of specific coping resources in general but especially when warning signs are noted
    • Uses relevant information from the Personal Safety Plan and documents in writing new information learned.
    • Demonstrates a range of de-escalation skills
    • Understands and works with clients from a strength based perspective
    • Demonstrates a range of early intervention skills

Physical Criteria:

  1. Must be able to walk between buildings
  2. Must be able to climb stairs
  3. Must be able to provide crisis intervention techniques when necessary
  4. Must be able to use telephone
  5. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  6. Must be able to participate in restraint code as defined in procedure.
