The Opportunity

Asuragen, a brand of Bio-Techne, is a molecular diagnostic company in Austin, Texas that is driven to deliver better answers for patients. We fulfill this mission by developing precision diagnostic tests that address unmet clinical needs through cutting-edge science. Our tests screen for common carriers of rare disorders, diagnose the molecular origins of complex genetic diseases, and pinpoint druggable, needle-in-a-haystack mutations that fuel cancers.  Asuragen’s diagnostic products are systems combining novel assay designs, chemistries, analysis pipelines and software to generate unmatched results using instruments that clinical laboratories already have. Our scientists and engineers leverage different backgrounds to create sophisticated technologies – but enable them with simple workflows that any laboratory can run with consistency.

Asuragen Research Senior Managers are innovative, collaborative and empowered as leaders within R&D.  They work with the talented team around them to conceptualize and build novel nucleic acid-based tests that help realize the promise of personalized medicine. In this role, you will create assay technologies that can resolve DNA, RNA, and/or protein biomarkers for clinical applications.  You will work with a cross-functional team of laboratory scientists, bioinformaticians and software developers, and experts in marketing, intellectual property, operations and customer solutions, to develop products and technologies that actualize the vision for the next-generation of our diagnostic tests.

What You’ll Do

  • Brainstorm new nucleic acid-focused assay concepts and technologies, and integrate scientific principles, quality policies and business needs to solve complex problems
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of R&D scientists and engineers, and actively liaise between research and commercial teams to connect technology innovation with kitted products and other commercial opportunities
  • Demonstrate proof-of-concept for tests that support Asuragen’s R&D and market-driven product pipelines
  • Lead the development and optimization of test prototypes and support early-stage familiarization and guardbanding studies
  • Analyze complex data with relevant statistical methods and tools (e.g., R or JMP), and clearly communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mine and synthesize the scientific literature and other technical and business resources to champion or vet new project initiatives
  • Communicate complex scientific topics and project progress through high-impact internal and external presentations
  • Provide the creative “spark” and develop ideas for invention disclosures and patents
  • Lead publications of scientific advances from internal and/or external interactions
  • Mentor, train and manage R&D staff for both professional development and specific expertise, such as amplification-based technologies or instrumentation.
  • Establish and maintain external relationships with key opinion leaders and/or subject matter experts

Qualifications

Who You Are & What You Bring

  • An innovative mindset for finding convergent and divergent solutions to complex problems (in the lab and out of it)
  • Experience developing novel multiplexed amplification assays or technologies, or realizing new applications for such methods. Familiarity with multi-omic methods or analyses is a plus.
  • Expertise in more than one of the following: qPCR, digital PCR, capillary electrophoresis, NGS and/or long-read sequencing
  • Strong track record of innovation, independence and productivity demonstrated through multiple peer-reviewed publications, grants, or patents
  • Leadership across multiple teams and projects that generated high-impact results
  • Direct experience in people management and development
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with cross-functional or interdisciplinary groups
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 2+ years post-Ph.D. industry relevant experience
  • A passion for improving patient care through diagnostic technologies, particularly in genetics and oncology
