SUMMARY

The 5-8 Math Specialist (MS) will work directly with the Learning Specialists and classroom teachers to make sure all students have opportunities to thrive in math. The MS will assess students and implement remediation strategies based on Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention. The MS will also design support systems and materials for accelerated students.

Learning Center Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement short-term, Tier 3 one-on-one, and Tier 2 small-group math interventions using research-based methodology for students during math class, Independent Study, and advisory time. 

  • Develop and oversee a before and after school math tutoring and homework program.

  • In coordination with the Dean of Academic Life and Middle School Learning Specialist, implement standardized math assessments.

  • Gather, compile, and analyze data from standardized assessments and link data to student learning and instruction.

  • Collaborate with faculty and the Student Support team in the identification of students who need math intervention and acceleration. 

  • Work with math teachers to develop a universally designed math curriculum that differentiates to help students who need remediation and acceleration. 

  • Ensure formal math accommodations are being implemented with fidelity. 

  • Provide formal recommendations to teachers on how to best support students in math. 

  • Oversee mathematics competitions like the AMC 8 and lead a Math Olympiad elective for middle school students. 

  • Proctor math tests for students who need extra time or specific accommodations during tests. 

  • Collaborate in the development and maintenance of research-based, professional resources for student support, accessible to students and faculty.

  • Communicate with parents as needed and lead parent education presentations. 

  • Promote and support the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

  • Continue professional development in research based practices in mathematics instruction including Mathematical Mindsets, Building Thinking Classrooms, Universal Design for Learning and Grading for Equity. 

  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on various committees as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid teaching credential or Educational Therapy Certificate required.

  • Bachelor's degree in math education, related field, or special education with a master's degree preferred

  • A minimum of five years of experience teaching, preferably in various grade levels in math or special education.

  • Preferred expertise in neurodiversity and/or Special Education

  • Deep knowledge of California’s Math Framework and best practices based on the newest research in math education

  • Knowledge of Map Growth a plus

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and families

  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills

  • Experience developing and leading professional development workshops and coaching sessions

  • Familiarity with technology tools and resources for math instruction

  • A proactive approach to this position is necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Middle School Math Specialist works primarily indoors in a classroom setting. They may need to lift and carry classroom supplies and equipment. They may also be required to attend school events and meetings outside of regular school hours.
