WHAT WILL BE YOUR IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE AT CAMP:

  • Provide expert guidance to campers, fostering skill development and a passion for the specific activity.

  • Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages campers to explore and develop their interests.

  • Implement strategies to encourage participation and create an inclusive atmosphere where campers feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things.

  • Provide support and guidance to counselors to help them incorporate the activity into their daily routines.

  • Prioritize the safety of campers during the specialized activity, implementing and enforcing safety protocols and guidelines.

  • Acknowledge and celebrate campers' achievements and milestones in the specialized activity, fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride.

  • Foster a sense of responsibility and awareness among campers regarding safety guidelines and procedures.

  • Serve as a positive role model, embodying the values of respect, cooperation, and enthusiasm for learning and personal growth.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Kids in the Game is looking for an Early Childhood Specialist of good health with the ability to provide fun and age appropriate instruction for the campers. This person will work closely with the Programming Assistant Director and the Early Childhood Division Leader to make the 2024 summer the best one ever. Potential candidates must possess leadership skills, be responsible, dependable and a team player. An early childhood specialist is responsible for the overall operation of the Pre K and Kindergarten daily activities from art to movement to general games. Preparation will include activity planning, modifications, implementation and safety management. Most importantly you will be providing a supportive, safe, and fun environment for the youth of New York City to grow and learn while experiencing the non-stop fun of Summer Camp!

The Early Childhood Specialist is responsible for fostering an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth while providing fun and age-appropriate instruction.

  • Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth.

  • Support in classroom management and behavior management of a group of 3 to 5 year olds. Help the Camp Counselors create positive reinforcement incentives.

  • Prepare and run activities in creative movement, art, or gross motor skills sports. Support in creating modifications for these games

  • Ensure that campers acquire a sincere appreciation learning new games, achieving an increased sense of self-esteem, cognitive skills and motor skills.

  • Demonstrate organizational skills: lesson planning, timelines, meet deadlines, following schedules and set goals.

  • Ensure that programs reflect the development of each camper, the goals of Kids in the Game and following our weekly theme guides

  • Plan and execute the activities in coordination with the program staff and supervisors

  • Arrange and maintain Early Childhood area, equipment, and set up and cleanup operations of the sports area on a daily basis.

  • Inform Camp Director of camper/staff problems which impact on the health or safety of any Kids in the Game camper. No issue or concern is too small to share!

  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues

  • Work to reduce conflict among campers, create a team-friendly environment with positivity.

  • Commitment to at least 3 days of training leading up to the first week of camp; Dates TBD but likely Saturdays before camp begins

  • Attend staff outings to take a break and enjoy time with coworkers outside of camp

Pre-Summer & Summer Work Schedule:

  • Pre Summer Camp Expectations: 

    • Part time virtual and on site training commitment throughout the end of May and the month of June

      • Specialist trainings (in person and virtual)

      • Virtual trainings start within the first two weeks of June

      • Onsite Trainings will happen 3 days of the week prior to the first week of your camp start date. 

  • Summer Camp Expectations:

    • Full time in-person camp hours

    • June 24th – August 23, 2023 

      • Camps can start June 24th or July 1st depending on location

    • Monday – Friday (7:45a – 4:15p)

      • Supporting at least one day per week of aftercare until 5:30pm

Compensation Range:

This is a part-time, seasonal position based in New York City. Art Specialists  must be available to participate in pre-summer trainings (virtual and on-site) to complete pre-summer work expectations. Early Childhood Specialists must be available to work full summer camp hours from late June to the end of August.

Pre Summer Compensation:

  • June pre summer training stipend: $300

Summer Compensation: 

  • Biweekly salary payments from July - August 2023

  • Total salary range of $5,200 to $6,400 depending on prior years of experience

    • Without the pre summer training stipend

    • Based on 8 weeks of camp. Some candidates may only work 6 to 7 weeks of camp.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate would meet some or all of the following qualifications:

  • A candidate who is truly Amazing with children!
  • Being DOE or DOH fingerprinted is a plus
  • Up to date Physical and TB test documentation will be required before starting
  • You must pass a NY State run background check
  • Being CPR, First Aid and AED certified is a plus
  • Patience: The ability to adapt to work easily with people who have different personalities, backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles and learning styles — simultaneously — is critical.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to relate to the younger children at program
  • Creativity: It is crucial to knowing how to make the curriculum engaging and how to adapt to varying styles of learning among students
  • 2+ years experience working with 2 to 5 year olds
  • Gross motor skills knowledge for younger age groups
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong classroom management and behavior management skill set
