Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region is searching for New Construction Apprentices to oversee specific construction tasks and projects with the intention to learn and grow in the knowledge and skills that are required to be a Construction Site Supervisor. The Apprentice will both manage projects independently and support and work on the homes of the Site Supervisor they are assigned to assist, while upholding the standards of safety, partnership, quality, and team participation. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a leading nonprofit organization in the field of affordable housing.​

 

This role is part of Habitat Charlotte’s Apprentice Program which aims to provide professional development to talented, motivated, and proficient individuals interested in continued employment with Habitat in both the near and long term. This is a short term, full-time, paid opportunity lasting one year.  Further employment beyond the term dates of the Apprenticeship are not guaranteed.   Because of the unique nature of this position, there will be a variety of required trainings which will be outlined in the “Apprentice Participation Agreement.”

Job Description

 

Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):

  • As requested, assist with site prep work that goes into a project from clearing to foundation in order to gain experience with this stage of construction
  • Gain proficiency at a variety of back office tasks required of a Site Supervisor including: ordering, scheduling, invoice approvals, construction workflow and critical path planning, sub-contractor expectations and management
  • Communicate effectively with other internal departments (Development, Volunteer Coordination, Family Services, etc) to ensure smooth completion of projects from start to finish
  • Plan for each work day to insure that all necessary resources - material and human - are available to complete the task list
  • Perform or supervise, monitor, and delegate tasks to volunteers, home owners and other team members as appropriate
  • As requested, provide leadership on special construction projects such as off-site builds and events
  • Provide a safe working environment at all times – abiding by all Habitat Charlotte Region, OSHA, and EPA safety standards
  • Maintain Habitat equipment, as assigned
  • Show initiative

  • Habitat Charlotte Region related tasks as requested by supervisor 

Physical requirements:                   

  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Ability to work and maneuver on roofs and high spaces
  • Ability to work in tight confines and within crawlspaces
  • Ability to maneuver over uneven ground
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to stand most or all of any given day
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods of time during all months of the year.  
  • Ability to perform basic computer skills

  • Responsible for the oversight of specific construction tasks and projects

Personal Vehicle:

  • Reliable transportation to work is required

Service Week: 

  • Tuesday - Saturday

Estimated Time Commitment:   

  • 40 hours / week
