Description

The Atlantic Council is seeking an Associate Director, Data Visualization who will work closely with design leadership and cross-functional partners to develop visual storytelling. They will be a key member of the digital and data team and a strong advocate for content design. In this role they will have the opportunity to support the entirety of Atlantic Council’s digital experience, including engaging, user-friendly, high-quality design of editorial, events, and marketing content on the Council’s digital platforms.

 

This is a hybrid position requiring at least three days per week in our Washington, DC office. The Associate Director, Data Visualization will report to the Senior Graphic Designer. Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers starting at $65,000.

 

Job Responsibilities

Platform Management & Trainings

  • Execute data visualization, visual storytelling, and experiences.
  • Manage digital content platforms like Flourish and Ceros for staff to create digital first content. Provide guidance and training for staff on how to use these platforms.
  • Project manage workflow related to editorial digital products.
  • Assist centers in finding freelance data visualization designers to work on projects, provide technical and strategic guidance, and assist in the management of the process.

 

Design and Branding  

  • Conceptualize, design, and implement data visualization and visual storytelling projects.
  • Provide support on design projects.
  • Policy development and enforcement on data viz.  
  • Review and approve program-created data visualization in Flourish.
  • Update the data visualization style guide.
  • Contribute to digital marketing projects.
  • Collaborate with editorial on the design aspect of their digital products.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years experience in content-focused role in the journalism, digital marketing or design fields.
  • Experience building style guides and language systems across products and platforms.
  • A portfolio demonstrating human-centered design thinking and solutions.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional command of grammar and punctuation.
  • Adept at “getting things done” in an environment of ambiguity and opportunity.
  • Advanced knowledge and use of design system tools (Figma, Flourish, Miro and Ceros) and project management tools (Jira, monday.com).
  • Experience working in a non-profit or agency preferred.
