Upper School Counselor

The Upper School Counselor is a full-time position. The Upper School Counselor reports directly to the Upper School Director and Director Student Wellbeing and Human Development. The Upper School Counselor works in collaboration with the Upper School Administration in service of the students and to develop a life-long foundation for wellbeing. The Counselor works directly with the Upper School staff, students, parents, teachers, outside professionals and is expected to model ethical and professional practices.  

 

The Upper School Counselor plays a significant role providing culturally responsive support for social and emotional needs and challenges of the students, parents and, at times, of the faculty as well.  The Counselor is available to meet with students, faculty and parents individually or in groups for consultation, assessment, and resource referral.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

COUNSELING

  • Work with individual students and their families on social, emotional, and behavioral issues that may affect their school experience and provides additional resources to meet the needs of diverse students.

  • Support teachers, students and families with crisis interventions and referrals. 

  • Advise faculty regarding individual student issues, classroom behavior management tips and interventions, etc. 

  • Collaborate with outside professionals as needed to support students and families.

  • Serve as a resource for parents, students, teachers and administrators for referrals and community resources. 

  • In collaboration with the Director of Student Wellbeing and Human Development, facilitate student support groups addressing issues of body image, self-worth, respect and boundaries, identity, conflict resolution, loss/change, stress management.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Participate in weekly Upper School Administration Meetings

  • Participate in weekly Upper School Staff Meetings

  • Attend and Represent Upper School at Independent School Counselor Meetings

  • Participate in support team meetings strategizing supportive interventions for students with serious academic and/or behavioral challenges 

  • Provide feedback and support to teachers with regard to social-emotional environment, climate and culture in classroom

  • In collaboration with the Elementary/Middle School Counselor, coordinate Parent Education Programs

  • In collaboration with the Upper School Administrative Team, conduct weekly Student Study meetings with teachers and administrators in order to discuss and plan to support high-need students

UPPER SCHOOL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION

  • Coordinate grade level seminars regarding Consent and Harassment, Growth and Development/Healthy Sexuality, Cyber Safety, Drug Education

  • Serve as liaison to outside community service providers 

  • Develop and coordinate workshops and discussion groups for parents parallel to student seminars.

  • Chaperone 9th and 12th grade trips

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree Required in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or Related Field
  • 3+ years school working in a school setting

  • Licensed Mental Health Professional.

  • California State School Counseling Certification preferred, not required.

  • Positive attitude, excellent communication and organizational skills
