Position Title: Camp Counselors (4-6 positions)

Status: Seasonal, Typically Monday-Friday

  • Training Weeks: June 24 July 3, 2024
  • Camper Weeks: July 8 July 27, 2024 (M-F)

Location: Camp Bovey Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI

Reports to: Camp Manager

Position Summary:

The purpose of Camp Bovey is to center youth, families and community while providing rich, joyful experiences that foster respect for self, community, and nature. Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for our youth campers, ages 8-14, and the heart of camp! You will partner with other Camp Bovey staff to plan, coordinate, and facilitate activities and guide campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.

DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Camp Counselors are responsible for, but not limited to the following functions:

1. 55% - Be an attentive, energetic, optimistic, caring, supportive, and kind adult role model and caregiver to campers ages 8-14

  • Inspire youth to be curious about the natural world (lead by example)
  • Empower campers to explore new activities, build friendships, and develop confidence.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, during activities, and throughout the camp to meet camper needs and desired outcomes.
  • Assist with welcoming activities, including finalizing registrations, collecting medications, loading camper gear, and communicating with caregivers.

2.20%- Maintain high standards for the health, safety, and well-being of campers and staff.

  • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including personal health needs.
  • Help with community stewardship of the camp facilities and grounds.
  • Maintain a clean, professional work and living space.
  • Maintain positive communication and professional relationships with all staff members, campers and caregivers.
  • Model and contribute to a positive camp culture that helps fulfill our mission to center youth, families and community while providing rich, joyful experiences that foster respect for self, community, and nature.

3. 15% - Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for all campers

  • Engage campers to grow as team players and individuals.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all camp activities including welcoming activities, environmental education, swimming, sports, low ropes, team building games, camping, archery, games, canoeing, fishing, and arts and crafts as directed.
  • Lead, plan and supervise activities as assigned.

4. 10% - Documentation and other job duties as defined

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • HS Diploma or GED, and must be at least 18 years old
  • One year of work experience beyond high school
  • Two years of verified employment/volunteering working and/or teaching youth ages 8+
  • Kind, creative, energetic, enthusiastic, and persistent
  • Interest in building meaningful relationships with campers and staff
  • Patience working with diverse youth in a place that may be unfamiliar to some campers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children and adults (plus a willingness to develop this skill!)
  • Must be comfortable in outdoor settings and with general camping and backpacking skills to a level that allows for focus on student experience.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in social work, education, youth development, recreation, environmental science, etc.
  • Prior experience as a counselor or educator in a residential camp setting
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain them

COVID Protocols

  • Due to the residential nature of the camp, we ask that all camp staff test for COVID at least once per week during the camper season. Tests will be provided.

Physical Aspects of the Position

  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the physical ability to provide first aid or CPR.
  • Physical endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Walking and some running on uneven or sandy surfaces.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment during activities. Requires range of hearing and eyesight that allows position to document, supervise and communicate effectively with campers and staff during activities.
  • Requires working outdoors throughout the day, in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to live at camp (M-F), delivering program during irregular hours in the facilities provided.
  • Occasional sleeping outdoors on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.
  • Cell service and WiFi are extremely limited, and the position requires the ability to work up to 5 consecutive days without access to phone or internet.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Daily rate of $120 (up to 23 days)
  • Shared lodging provided, sleeping quarters shared with campers and other staff during the week
  • Transportation provided to Camp Bovey from Minneapolis
  • Food provided when campers are in session
