Position Title: Kitchen Assistant

Status: Seasonal, up to 30 hrs/week, June 24 July 27, Typically Monday-Friday

Location: Camp Bovey Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI

Reports to: Camp Cook

Position Summary:

The kitchen assistant plays a key role in supporting the health and well-being of our camp community and contributes to a positive camp culture that helps fulfill the camp’s mission. Under the direction of the Cook, the assistant supports the dining hall's overall operations and helps prepare daily meals and snacks for the camp community (up to 50 total).

DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Is responsible for, but not limited to the following functions:

1. 45% - Assist with the daily operations of the camp food service.

  • Assist with food preparation for daily meal plans (washing, peeling, cutting, etc.)
  • Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution.
  • Store food and leftovers at proper temperature and maintain daily temperature logs
  • Maintain all meal service records for campers and staff
  • Ensure campers are properly hydrated.

2. 45% - Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen, dining area, and related equipment.

  • Wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
  • Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camp’s procedures.
  • Deep clean the appliances and cabinetry

3. 10% - Be a positive presence at camp.

  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, and involvement and empowerment of youth.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, including planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Assist counselors with evening cabin duties such as monitoring the bathhouse, assisting with cabin reflection, or monitoring a cabin while a counselor takes an evening break.
  • Maintain a clean, professional work and living space

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a minimum of one total year of work experience
  • Kind, energetic, enthusiastic, and persistent
  • Interest in working around diverse youth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with camp settings
  • Experience working with kids through babysitting, camp counselor positions, or others
  • Knowledge of food preparation and serving, storage of food and dishwashing procedures. Experience working in kitchens, dining, or restaurant settings.
  • WI ServeSafe or Food Handler’s license.
  • Current certification in first aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.

COVID Protocols

  • Due to the residential nature of the camp, we ask that all staff test for COVID at least once per week during the camper season. Tests will be provided.

Physical Aspects of the Position

  • Due to working in close kitchen quarters with other staff, the position must be able to wear a mask for extended periods of time.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds
  • Must be able to navigate rugged terrain at camp including stairs and sandy roads

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $18/hour, up to 30 hours per week between June 24-July 27
  • Food provided when campers are in session
